Where would I find a divorce?.....

Post by jean o » Tue Feb 06, 2007 8:43 pm

I am still trying to knock down my brickwall and wondered about divorces 1820-1825. Where would I look please?

Hi Jean,
According to the book Alienated Affections: The Scottish Experience of Divorce and Separation, 1684-1830 by Leah Leneman, they are all to be found in the Edinburgh Commissary Court records at NAS (Refs CC8/5 and CC8/6) no matter where in Scotland the divorce took place. Unfortunately, these are no yet listed on the online catalogue. Under CC8/6 it says: "For cases 1801- 1835, see the lists in CC8/6/176," which in turn also lists CC8/20/6 as a possible reference.

I wrote to NAS in mid-December about a case in my own family, but have yet to hear back :( Maybe you'll have more luck?
All the best,
Sarah

Do let me know if they find anything! At least, if they find that the records are indeed where they are supposed to be, I will have some hope!
Regards,
Sarah
