Found a relative (I think) in the 1851 census for Lanarkshire, but it says the address is "Stevenson Land" I have no idea what that means, any suggestions?

Hi Wanda,
I think that 'Land' is a Scots word for residence/abode etc [although I'm sure someone will correct me if this is not precise enough!]. This means that Stevenson Land would be the residence of [a family] Stevenson. I've got some Smiths living at "Smith's Land, Clydesdale Street" and "Telfer's Land, Drumpark", which presumably is Mr Telfer's Hoose!!
Best wishes
Brian

Re: Problem with address
A land in Scottish terms can mean the area coming off a street via a close and all the houses that that area contains, sometimes some way back from the close involved.Wanda Stevenson wrote:Found a relative (I think) in the 1851 census for Lanarkshire, but it says the address is "Stevenson Land" I have no idea what that means, any suggestions?

Most often used when tenements are involved.
"Stevenson" will be the current or maybe original owner.
Some of the "lands" off High Street in Edinburgh stretch back a couple of 100 yards from High Street.
Think of Stevenson's Land as being like a lane coming off a main street.
In Brian's examples Smith's Land is a close coming off Clydesdale Street; but note that "Telfer's Land" may or may not currently belong to Mr Telfer.
Sometimes the land name changed when the owner changed, sometimes not!
