Hi everyone,
Trying to find out more about my gggg grandfather John Caldwell (b.1816, Glasgow). In 1855 he's mentioned on one of his childrens birth certs. as being a soldier in the 92nd Foot. He's not with his family in Barrhead in the 1861 and 1871 censuses, so I assume he's with his regiment then.
Has anybody any idea where the 92nd would be during this time? Also can't find his death, so not sure if he was killed in action or not. Also no record of his discharge in NA site.
Can anyone help?

Hi Caroline,
The 92 regiment of foot was the Gordon Highlanders. For your rellie to have been in service in the 1860s I would assume he was in the 1st Battalion. The Gordon's were very busy at the time you are looking for John Caldwell.
1855 Crimean war: Turkey
1856.07 Gibraltar
1858.03 India
1858 Sepoy rebellion
1861.07.04 92nd (Gordon Highlanders) Regiment of Foot
1863 England
Scotland
Ireland
1868 India
1878 Afghanistan
1880 India
1881.01 South Africa
For more information try the Gordon Highlanders site ...

But don't limit yourself there. If you google you will find many interesting sites including one for the Gordon Highlanders Museum.
Happy Hunting,
HeatherH

Hi Heather and David,
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
Just one other question......
In 1851 John Caldwell is listed as a Calico Printer, so I assume he didn't go into the army until later. However by then he would be in his late 30s, so wasn't he a bit old to be joining the army?
Also on his childrens marriage and death certs, his occupation is given as Block Printer, never as Soldier. Could he just have been a part time soldier?
Forgive my ignorance on this!

Your suggestion of being a volunteer, e.g. local militia could well be correct.
For the era involved that name would be something like Aberdeenshire Militia for the militia associated with the 92nd.
However, given the geographical mis-match - Glasgow/Aberdeenshire, I'm beginning to wonder if a spurious record has crept in here.
Or could it be that he served his time before 1851 ?

Afraid I can't answer that one as I cannot find him or his family on the 1841 census. I know he married in the Campsies,Stirlingshire in 1837, then had a son Thomas(b.1838) and a daughter, Margaret(b.1840) there before moving to Denny. However there's no trace of them in 1841, so I don't know what his occupation was then
