Entering M*cPh*e in the census records I get for

1841- 147 Records
1851- 67 Records
1861- 27 Records.
I am assuming this was because of the clearances.
Is there anyway of finding out where they would have gone?

Do I just keep looking through the immigration records of the various countries or was there somewhere that this district would have gone to en masse.

Hi Wini,

If you view the microfilms of these censuses, you will often find in the endpages of each enumeration district a paragraph or two from the enumerator regarding the variances in numbers from the previous censuses for that area. That can mention things like emigration, or migrant labour.

I don't think these pages can be found on the scanned digital images on ScotlandsPeople or in New Register House.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks Andrew,
There is no chance of me being able to look at these records. I am 400 kms from my nearest town.
I have a cousin in Clackmannanshire and we share the same MacPhie grandmother, so I will see if I can get her to go and look.

Hi Wini,

She will need to go to Edinburgh (Central Library [free] or New Register House [chargeable]), or Inverness (Library) to see these microfilms, or order them into an LDS Family History Centre. I am not sure if anywhere else in Scotland has the Inverness-shire census microfilms for all of the years. Edinburgh will be a lot nearer for her to reach.

All the best
