Does any body know of a good book that tells you about the Irish immigrants in Scotland around the time of the famine and before.

Hi there, I (and I suspect quite a few other people here) found John Burrowes book 'Irish: The Remarkable Saga of a Nation and a City' a pretty interesting read. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Irish-Remarkabl ... 985&sr=8-3

Hope this helps,

Scott

Hi
As Scott recommends, The Irish, by John Burrowes is a good easy read.
I enjoyed it.
Burrowes also did a decent account of the life of Benny Lynch. Pb £5

You might find a few of the articles in this wee tome of interest as well.
“Irish immigrants and Scottish Society in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries”
It is edited by Tom Devine and you should get a copy for around £18.
And you may find this of interest:

I can recommend as an easy and informative read, on the Irish Famine
“The Great Shame” by Thomas Keneally.
Should get a good hb copy for £7.

Hi Liz,
Sorry ah missed yer wee do at the Uni.
Other than the fact that it started in the middle o’ the night, I was still living under the “He souldnae be allowed oot himsel” regime.
However, things are improving and I can now cross the road on my own, providing it is at the “Wee Jinky” (pedestrian crossing, for non Weegies)
All being well, will make the next meet up.

Davie

At least we know you're still fighting fit then ... the thought of a temperance society on the south side takes a bit of imagination though!
