Hi Patricia

Welcome to Talkingscot. All questions about ancestors welcome, however it might help if you gave a little more detail for this post and your other one about the Flanagans.
How about a possible span of dates and some idea of which part of Scotland to look. :!:

Hi Russell ,I really have very little info on them. my grandmother was Mary Waters daughter of Peter Waters and Elizabeth Flanagan who were married in July 1888 in St. Johns RC Church, Portugal St, Glasgow. I believe.they would have been born in1860's.Peter was a coppersmith. his parents were Peter Waters and Jane Birrells . I presume they were from the same area ,but I dont know .Peter was a housepainter but again I am not sure. Elizabeths parents were James Flanagan and Mary Cairney . Apart from the fact James was a farmer I know nothing. I presume they lived in or around Lanarkshire but people moved around so much Ican't be sure . I am hoping someone can enlighten me on the subject. Thanks . Patricia.

Hi Patricia,
As you will have noticed, there is nobody named Birrells in the census in Scotland, but lots of people named Birrell, without the "s". Or, there is the following possibility. What do you think of them? They seem to be a bit mixed up about who was born where, but maybe?

In 1841, Airdrie, Lanarkshire
William Barrels, 43, born Scotland, Ag Lab (added later-- forgot to write in the occupation last night)
Ellen Barrels, 42, born Scotland
David Barrels, 7, born Scotland
Jean Barrels, 3, born Scotland

In 1851, this family is at 1 Quarry Road St, New Monkland, Lanark
William Barrels, 53, head, born Kilsyth, Stirling, Cow Keeper
Helen Barrels, 52, wife, born Slamannan, Linlithgow
David Barrels, 17, son, born Airdrie, Lanark, Hand Loom Weaver Cotton
Janet Barrels, 13, daughter, born Airdrie, Lanark, Scholar

Janet (Jane) is not listed as having been born in Kilsyth as was the Jane, wife of Peter Waters in the 1871 census, but her father is.

According to the IGI William Burrel married Helen Boyd in June, 1829 in New Monkland.

Well, I'm too tired right now to really think this through any more, but let me know what you think.

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Patricia,

You are in luck! Patrick Waters and Jane Berrell were married in 1855.

Marriage took place on 4th May 1855 at St Patrick's Chapel, Anderston. Patrick was a House Painter, age 20 and had been born in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal.Father Patrick Waters, Taylor, Mother Bridget Gallagher. Jane was 21 and had been born in Kilsyth. She was a weaver- parents Nelson Berrell and Jennet Boyd.

By 1861 the family were living at 6 Finnieston Lane, Anderston
Patrick Waters Head age 26 House Painter born Ireland
Jane Waters Wife age 28 born Kilsyth
Janet Waters daughter age 5 born Glasgow
Patrick Waters son age 3 born Glasgow (Patrick Waters born 16/3/1858)

1871 91 Cumberland St Hutchesontown (see other post from Sarah)

1881 39 Florence Street, Govan

NB Jane Waters nee BerrellBurrell/Birrell died in 1874. Patrick subsequently married Jane Wyllie nee McMahon in 1878.It is she who is shown as his wife on the census, with two daughters from her first marriage.

Peter (Patrick)Waters (snr) appears to have died in Hutchesontown in 1888.

Not sure where Peter (Patrick) jnr was in 1881. In 1891 he was at No 4 Pollockshaws Road, Gorbals (age 31, occ. Coppersmith, born Glasgow)with wife Elizabeth (age 26, born Ireland) and daughter Mary age 1.

Hope this helps,
Isobel
