One of my distant possibles:

Private James Quinn 266366. Found him on CWGC, but can't find
Medal Card.

Anyone know anything about Thomas Battalion?

I think this is his medal card below. It seems his old regimental number was changed to a newer number.

If you buy this image, I'd be intrigued to see it, in order to understand why he doesn't turn up indexed under 1/7<sup>th</sup> Battalion.

Hi Cathy,
By coincidence i got a record very early this morning for a good neighbour (Tricia); possibly her gr-father's medal record.
All she knew was that he was a sergeant in the Cameronians / Rifles,
and that at one time he looked after prisoners in Turkey? Or that he was looking after Turkish? prisoners...

The Reg. Nos. of James Quin (3333 & 266366)
are very close to James Porter (3315 & 266354)
Looks like they certainly knew each other!
The downloaded page doesn't give much detail though - i'd hoped it would, but this is all it says.

James Porter was from Londonderry - but whether the county or town is not known.
He married in Glasgow 1922, and was born approx. 1888 to 1893.
His only surviving son, Jimmy (born in Whiteinch) doesn't even know exactly where or when.

All those around where i live know i've an interest in family history, and Tricia asked how she could find any details of her gr-father.
This came about when her 85yr old uncle Jimmy said to her one day that he still regrets losing the only known photo of his father.
What happened was that in the 1950s a photographer came to the door offering to take family photos.
Uncle Jimmy didn't need any (he's unmarried), but asked the man if could enlarge his father's photo.
He said yes, and took it away with him....never to be seen again, and Jimmy has rued the day ever since.

Tricia's GF died in 1947, before she was born,
and she now knows that there is very little chance now of ever seeing what he looked like.
She'd hoped the Army records might've had a photo...but alas, seems not.

So Cathy, if you know anything of where James Quinn served, i'd be much obliged if you could let me know.

Jack, I'm intrigued now. I've booked the chauffeur for next Saturday.
(Too late now to deny his golfing privilages for tomorrow).

I don't know if this James Quinn belongs (to my cousin).
Its the McKenna / Quinn / McLeod family I posted of previously.
I have just received a transcript of his death which states KIA France.

David, I will get a copy of the Medal Card regardless and try and scan a copy to you.

One of two things happened here, I think.

Either he served earlier with a regular or special reserve battalion, and was then transferred to the 1/7th, hence the different regimental numbers; or the different numbers derive from a reorganisation.

What a sad tragedy! going through all that fighting in WW1 to be killed in action the day before the Armistice.

It seems that Herchies cemetery is in Belguim.

All going well. I'll be at TNA next week.
I'm really just trying at the moment to verify if he does belong to my cousin. If its him, he was born James McKenna.
The old "clutching at straws" here.
The Poor Record that Annette found stated that his mother
Helen McKenna was in receipt of 12/- pension a week for un-named grandson.
So thinking the grandson's father must be either James or his
half-brother John Quin, but have yet to find a marriage for them.
