Hi Marg
Is it informaiton on the village itself you are looking for or particular family names of folk who lived there? If it is names, I suggest you post 'em and someone might be able to link up.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Information about the village and its formation by Earl Colin is what I'm interested in as our KIDD family lived there. We visited briefly in 1999 and several people have given me snippets of information but I'm wondering if more has come to light recently.

Were Earl Colin's supporters members of a Scots unit or locals who were tied to him as the local Laird? Who was captured or killed in skirmishes or battles? What did they do while he was in exile in Holland?

Hi Marg
There is some information about Lord Balcarres here, which you may have read already.
http://www.electricscotland.com/history ... caress.htm
I suspect there may be more detailed information to be found in books and archives. On The National Archives of Scotland site www.nas.gov.uk - a search for Balcarres turns up some interesting items e.g.

GD406/1/11844 James VII, Dublin Castle, to Colin, earl of Balcarres, announcing his safe arrival in Ireland and sending him a commission at Colonel of horse and foot. He thinks of sending his correspondent 100 horse and 150 dragoons 29 Mar 1689

Best wishes

Hi Marg,
I would be interested to hear if you turn up some interesting local records.

Have you seen the "Annals of Colinsburgh" by Robert Dick ? I saw it once at Kirkcaldy Library - I'm sure it must be available elsewhere . Can't actually remember much about the contents - I was just trying to find a reference to my gg grandfather Thomas Sime who was schoolmaster there in late 19th C .

Good Luck

Sally

Hello,
I hope you dont mind me replying to your post, only my ancestors came from Colinsburgh.
William Ramsay b1791 was the master blacksmith and I believe the blacksmith shop is still there but has now been turned into a resedentual dwelling.
If you have any information regarding Colinsburgh or Kilconquhar that you would like to share i would be most grateful.

Hi David and others,

I was in Colinsburgh in 1999 but on a specific KIDD family search as we had a few questions to sort out. Now these are done I'm just interested in the creation of the village, local records and the history of the village since as well as our James KIDD who was born 1803 and died 1886 in the village.

His Father, Thomas KIDD born 1761, died 1843 was the Baker in Colinsburgh but is buried in Newburn as was James not Kilconquhar as Colinsburgh doesn't have a burial ground. His Mother Margaret ANDERSON born in Dunfermline 1773 had Newburn connections and inherited a Colisburgh business from her Mother Catherine SCOT who married there in 1771 .

Life in Fife must have been harsh in 1839 - 1848 as our family immigrated to Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia. However James KIDD returned twice. firstly to attend to his parents estate in 1845 and the immigration of all his surviving siblings to Australia then after a few years in Australia he returned again, purchased 'Mayfield' on South Wynd, remarried in 1858 and remained there with investments in Australia.

My biggest query is 'what was his profession?' James KIDD is described in various census and marriage documents as a retired sheep farmer, own means, retired Australian pioneer and investor.

One of his son's journals tells of stories about India and the Clippers so what did he do before setting out for Australia in 1839 aged 36, then returning to Fife to marry at 43 and 55 and funding children to immigrate to Australia and South Africa.

Our mystery!
