Angus Grant - I'm flummoxed!
Hi all
Been trying to tie off some loose ends, and have come to a full stop with my 2 x great uncle Angus Grant.
What I know -
Born 10 April 1867, youngest child of Alexander Grant and wife Isabella nee McBean/McBain, at Balnacruie, Inverallan.
Balnacruie is the family farm name. It is in the annoying chunk of Inverness-shire/Moray which keeps changing boundaries. Variously found as Duthil, Inverness-shire; Cromdale & Inverallan (and sometimes Advie), Moray; Cromdale, Elgin; and variations of all of the foregoing!
I have Angus in the 1871 census, age 3, at home with mum, dad and siblings at Balnacruie (spelt Balnacruigh), Cromdale, Inverallan.
I have him in 1881, age 13, again at home with mum, dad and some siblings, at Balnacravibh, Cromdale, Elgin. He is a scholar.
After that - nothing.........
1891 his parents and my gg grandad Alexander, the second youngest child, are still at Balnacruie.
The farm passed to my gg grandad, and he is there with his family in 1901. No Angus.
Can't find a marraige or a death for Angus that fit.
Can't find him anywhere on 1891 or 1901 on ancestry.
Would love to fill in the one blank in this part of the family. Have traced all the siblings through BMD and censuses and would like to find poor Angus too!
What am I missing? Unless of course he emigrated. Will have to try and trawl through those options, but perhaps someone can pick up something obvious I'm missing?
Thanks for reading.
Ellen.

Hi Ellen,
Well, this is all I have to offer at the moment. His year of birth is off two years and the month is off too... so not ideal. But I've seen worse!
1900
Great Falls, Cascade County, Montana
109 Central Avenue
Grant Angus, lodger, 35, single, born June 1864 in Scotland, came to U.S. in 1886, is naturalized, Machinist.
If all else fails, maybe this is him?
All the best,
Sarah

SP has 3 records for Angus Grant in the Census 1891 aged 22 - 24
SP has no records for Angus Grant in the Census 1901 aged 32 - 34
SP has only 3 records for Angus Grant marrying 1883 - 1901
I included all districts in my search.

Thanks Frances and Sarah for your responses.
Frances.
The marraiges - I already have 2 of them - not my Angus. The third one is a George Angus Grant, marrying in Glasgow, so at present have not spent the extra 5 credits to view. This side of the family don't do more than one christian name, and George is not a name that appears in this line at all.
On the other hand - curiosity may get the better of me, and the need to be certain, so will probably check it out if nothing else comes up!
The 1891 census - have also already checked these out. BUT - when I enter Grant, Angus, age 22-26, all districts, I am only getting 2 hits. What am I doing differently from you?????
Sarah
This chappie in Montana is looking like the best possible option at the moment. I'll try to find an Angus born June 1864 in Scotland to rule him either out or possibly in. Thanks for that.
Regards
Ellen.

Curious follow up!
There is an Angus Grant b. June 1864 on the IGI - and in Duthil. An extract. Parents Alexander Grant (I was getting excited here!) and Margaret Collie.
This one is one of the marraiges from SP. In 1886! January 1886 to be exact. He married Mary Jane Law in North Berwick, but his address is in Duthil, and he's a Police Constable.
So - if this is the chap that emigrated to Montana sometime in 1886, why is he saying he's single? Ooops - typing this is getting the brain in gear - must go check for a death of Mary Jane. Perhaps something awful happened early in the marraige and he took himself off to the States.
I'll be back.
Cheers
Ellen.
Later addition - nope, no Mary Jane death apparent. 2 x Mary Law/Grant deaths1896 and 1946, but neither is her. The mystery continues.

Hi Ellen:
I've retried the 1891 census search and I only come up with 2! I'll have to say it was the late hour of my search and crossed eyes, because I don't think I did anything any differently this morning.
I would have thought you'd have Grants aplenty to choose from during that time frame.
Frances

Hi Ellen,
There's this guy, indexed as Augus Grant in the 1901:
3 Monzie Place, Kilmallie, Argyll
Augus Grant, 35, head, born Kilmonivaig, Inverness, Surfaceman
Ann Grant, wife, born Kilmonivaig, Inverness
Anna Grant, 5, born Fort William, Inverness, Scholar
Dougald Grant, 4, born Fort William, Inverness
Kenneth Grant, 1, born Fort William, Inverness
I don't think he's yours, but it might help to rule out one of those marriages you found?
He looks to be the same as the one in 1891, an unemployed shepherd, son of Dugald and Jessie, which fits with his son's name.
1891
Annat, Kilmonivaig, Inverness
Dugald Grant, 65, head, born Kilmonivaig, Invss Shire, Shepherd
Jessie Grant, 56, wife, born Kilmonivaig, Invss Shire, Shepherd's Wife
Margaret Grant, 26, Daur, born Kilmonivaig, Invss Shire, Gen Serv Domestic
Angus Grant, 23, son, born Kilmailie, Invss Shire, Shepherd Unemployed
Mary Grant, 18, Daur, born Kilmonivaig, Invss Shire, Gen Serv, Domestic
Archibald Grant, 13, son, born Kilmonivaig, Invss Shire, Scholar
Sorry, this doesn't help much, but slowly we're getting to know all the Angus Grants born within a few years of each other!
Thank goodness he wasn't named Alexander
Regards,
Sarah

Okay, one more thing and then I'll go to bed
I feel like it's time to organize all these Anguses... If we try to track them ALL down, maybe we can see who is the odd one out! In the 1871 census, we have three reasonable contenders in addition to the one we know is correct:
1) Angus Grant born Braemar, Aberdeenshire in 1867
2) Angus Grant born Rothiemurchus, Inverness in 1865 (in Duthil in 1871) This is our policeman
3) Angus Grant born Kilmonivaig, who we have already found in 1891 and 1901-- he's out
There are two more, but ages perhaps too far off?
1) born Dores, Inverness in 1862, son of Alexander & Jessie
2) born North Morar, Inverness in 1863, enumerated in 1871 with his grandmother and mother, both Mary Grant. He is a "fisherman's son"
The North Morar one is a farm servant in Argyll in 1881
The Dores one is a sailor on the Fantasy, County: Ships in European Ports. He is age 19 and listed in both England and Scotland in 1881
The whole Braemar family seems to have disappeared in 1891, but they are back in Braemar, including Angus, in 1901. So I assume they are hiding under some odd indexing in 1891. So he's out.
SO... if I have this straight, the Angus in Montana in 1900 has to either be the Dores sailor, the North Morar fisherman's son or yours. Either way, the age is off to fit what he claims in 1900: one is too young and the others are too old.
The question now is which, if any, of all these Anguses fit with the marriage and death records you have already found? Can we eliminate any more?
All the best,
Sarah
