John Girtrig Young - He could be one of mine after all!

Post by emanday » Thu Apr 12, 2007 12:33 pm

Way back in January in my post about one of my Crichton rellies http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic. ... oung#56414 jintyb (Janet) told me about an Architect called John Girtrig Young. At the time, I could find absolutely no relationship between his Young's and my Girtrig's. ](*,)

Well, I think I found it (but I'll hold off on the [woohoo] till I'm absolutely sure  )

He seems to have got his middle name from Margaret Ross's mother, Isobel Guthric (there's that spelling variation again). Margaret married a Craik and one of their daughters married a Young. Phew!

It's all a bit convoluted and I have more checking to do, but it looks very hopeful [-o<

P.S. Can we have a "fingers crossed" smiley :D

Hi Janet,

S'all your fault  Ever since you told me about him, I've kept going back to his file and never could get even a whisper of a connection. Then, last night while I was doing a bit more on the siblings of my main Girtrig line, up popped a child with the middle name Young! Well, you can't ignore that kind of coincidence, can you?

I ended up on my hands and knees on the floor in the middle of IGI printouts placing each bit as I followed it through.

Have to say, when the married surname Craik appeared I thought "Oh No! Not another weird name" but then I saw her mother's surname and whooped so loud I scared the poor cat off her cushion

Cracked It!

I said
He seems to have got his middle name from Margaret Ross's mother, Isobel Guthric (there's that spelling variation again). Margaret married a Craik and one of their daughters married a Young.
Got it sorted now!

John Girtrig Young's GG Grandmother, Margaret Craik married James Young.
Margaret's BROTHER Charles married Margaret Ross whose mother's maiden name was Guthric, deviated from her family name Girtrig.

So John Girtrig Young got his middle name from his Grandfather's Auntie by marriage's mother!

I did say it was a bit convoluted, didn't I  So, unless any of James Young/Margaret Craik's descendants married a cousin from the Charles Craik/Margaret Ross line, he isn't related to me.

It has also solved the mystery about where the middle name Ross came from in my grandmother's line!

Hi Janet

I'm afraid I'm hi-jacking this post, having noticed you're researching Mairs in Ayrshire. I've recently discovered my 4x great-grandmother, Cecilia Mair. She's in the 1841 census, living in Ayr with her son James Miller & family - how could she marry someone with such a common name  In the census she is listed as being 87 & there is a Cicely Mair, born in 1754 in Galston. As Secilla Mair she married John Miller in 1775 in Mauchline. Does any of this tie in with your research?

Hi Muriel
Cecilia Mair isn't a name I've come across, yet. All my female Mairs seem to be the usual Janets Marys Jeans etc.Nothing as posh as Cecilia :D :D As for common names try looking for Andrew Wilson!!He's my gt Grandfather and I think he was beamed down from outer space in 1888 to get married, have kids and die in 1911.

Best wishes

Hi Janet

Cecilia does seem to be an odd one out. I've found 16 children born to John Mair in Galston between 1740 & 1765. I think there must to 2 John Mairs because some of them are too close to be the same family - miracles excepted! All have ordinary names except for Cecilia & as no mothers name is given I guess I'll never know who her siblings are. Pity, but I'm just pleased she lived long enough to be on the 1841 census otherwise I'd never have known about her at all.

Hi Muriel
The BIVRI has a Cecal Mair b. 9/4/1757 to John Mair and Eupham Mershel but this was in Newburgh,Fife. They had 7 children between 1746 and 1762.I checked this on SP and GROS Data is 450/0010 0161.The birth of Cecily Mair 1754 on IGI was a submitted entry so maybe your Cecilia started off in Fife.
Best wishes

Hi Janet

While Cecily appears in the IGI as a submission, she is actually in the OPR for Galston - born 7 January 1754, daughter of John Mair. In the 1841 census she is in Ayr & is listed as being 87 years old and born in the county. So I'm pretty sure that is her - the enumerator obviously thought that at her age she should have it stated properly & not rounded!!
