Linlithgow

Post by Clannessie » Sat Apr 14, 2007 8:07 pm

I might have relatives on the Hamilton 1851 census: Elizabeth, Helen and Thomas Galloway (Mother, daughter and grandson) in Hamilton. Elizabeth lists her birthplace as Linlithgow and I can not read the word after it. Does anyone know what Linlithgow was listed as with two words back then?

Hi Karen

Can you add the image to The Gallery and then we can take a look at it and try to decipher it for you.

Hi Karen
Perhaps the Linlithgow meant the county of Linlithgow (Linlithgowshire - later West Lothian ) and the name that followed was the actual parish ?
Do the rest of the entries have the county before the parish ?

You could always post it to the gallery if its difficult to read .

Hi Karen

Here are the instructions for uploading images to The Gallery, just in case you haven't done this before.

Thanks Jean and Sally. I saved it off Scotlandspeople but when I try to upload it to the Gallery...says error and gives the list of endings accepted. It says it takes a tiff and that is how I saved it. Any suggestions?

Hi Karen,

According to Ancestry 1851 census, your Elizabeth Galloway was born in Uphall, Linlithgow. Daughter Helen was born in Hamilton and grandson Thomas also born in Hamilton.

Wow...thanks Annie...you know I think thats what the scribble could be Uphall...now what was Uphall in connection to Linlithgow...excuse my ignorance...being from the colonies here :)

I still need to connect her for sure. I have her marriage record to Thomas Galloway in Stirling in 1807. Helen was the last child born in Hamilton in 1829. In the 1841 census Elizabeth (widow/pauper) and Helen lived with a son, James, in Hamilton. I found the right names now with a grandson/son....seems like no marriage with Thomas being a Galloway at 2 years old.

Thanks for everyone's quick help!

OK I am confusing myself...

Anne you said you found her birth in Uphall...but under what name? Her maiden name was Campbell. Birth around 1791.

Hi Karen,

No, I don't have her BC...you're a wee bit confused :)

The info I gave you was from the 1851 Census record on Ancestry which stated that Elizabeth was born in Uphall, Linlithgow. Ancestry doesn't have BDM's on their sight as far as I'm aware otherwise I would have a look for you. If I happen to come across anything in my own Linlithgow files, I'll let you know.

I'm no good with maps and the likes, but I believe I have some of mine who were born in Uphall...I only know it's in Linlithgow. Perhaps Andrew or one of the other map experts can show on a map.

Regards,
Anne H

ok duh...sorry you did say "census"! hehehe
I just got excited there to maybe it really is my relative for sure!!!

Thanks again for the help and once I figure why I can't upload it to the gallery, I will still add it there....and get another opinion that it says Uphall!

Karen
