Carol,

Do you mean Gairloch? If so Gairloch is on the West Coast of Wester Ross seen on the small map here:
http://203.142.15.77/gairloch/guide/index.htm

However Inverleven is on the west coast of Loch Lomond in the Lowlands. I can't find anything on google that would show a connection between the names.

Ok did some more digging by looking at maps on Google and I have found Gare Loch and Garelochhead and the top end of the Loch near the river mouth.

A little bit of history on it:

Hope this is the place you are looking for :)

Hi

Thank you for this information. I was thinking since he stayed Port Glasgow/Greemck I was beginning to wonder if it was the mouth of Greenock even though Garelochead is up at the top of the gare lock. As someone said before its extracts and maybe the way its been written and transcribed.

Regarding Inverleven from the census it states Inverleven Fifeshire but I have never heard of Inverleven and maybe was it Inverkeithing ????
Cheers

Hi

As many people from Garelochead, arrochar, Roseneath lived off the sea, many families moved between Greenock and their respective village. I have families where children were born in Greenock and their siblings Roseneath. Some were born in Roseneath and baptised in Greenock, it just depended on the time of year, and where the best opportunities were. Greenock seems to be much nearer by sea than travelling to the main town of Dumbarton.
