Slow InterNet Connections

Post by DavidWW » Mon Apr 30, 2007 2:07 pm

Anyone else in the UK experiencing s-l-o-w broadband performance, and even timeouts on page loads? The situation seems to vary from one minute to another, and one hour to the next ..............

I've had this since y'day afternoon, - the Kent earthquake :!: ? :!:

And yes, I've tried to phone my broadband supplier, - blueyonder as was, now Virgin media, but it's the normal tale of "We're currently experiencing high call volumes, and the minimum wait time is 15 mins" ....... OK it's an 0845 number, so local call rate, but experience tells me that the wait time could be a lot longer than 15 mins, and I've got other things to do.

Turns out it probably wasn't the www, but at my end.............

I had major computer problems last Thursday, including a blue screen of death scenario. Once I managed to get back to the C:\ prompt running
chkdsk /r revived the computer, but be aware such such a procedure can take a couple of hours.

Problems didn't stop there, however as Norton AntiVirus then threw a fit which ended up in its having to be reloaded/reinstalled from their website, - a simple process surely?, - but no!

After 4 hours I gave up, and as a temporary measure, installed AVG (even although it doesn't have the inbuilt firewall that Norton has). And it looks like AVG is set up as default to run in the background which is why InterNet Explorer was having problems getting a slice of the computer's time to access the www ............... it was the near constant whirring of the HD that gave it away.

And yes, I did manage to reload/reinstall Norton, but eventually had to resort to using a utility downloaded from their site to remove any trace of the program prior to reloading/reinstallation, - the Windows "Add/Remove programmes" wasn't working; but I'm told that I should have been looking not only for "Norton" but also "Symantec" in the programme list !

I'm surprised you had speed problems running AVG David. Most of the people I know of who went over to it in preference to Norton did so because it DOESN'T slow things down as much as Norton did.

I'm thinking it might have been because of the stuff Norton leaves behind if not uninstalled properly interfering.

I've now got a "Magic Bullet" to cope with the blue screen of death scenario! Well, it's actually a CD

It's the Linux Live CD. Basically it is the entire Linux OS on disc. If you set your PC to boot from the CD drive first and then pop this in it boots into the Linux OS instead of Windows. Nothing gets installed onto your hard drive, but it gives you access and means that you can save your files before retrying a boot into Windows to repair/reinstall anything.

Best of all? It's FREE [many-greens]
