McKergow
Hi all
I have an ancestor called Adam McKergow, born around 1780. He moved to North Wales at some point, but is always listed on census returns as being born in Scotland (as is his wife Maria).
I have looked in all the usual places but can find very little information on any McKergows at all - Family Search shows a few in Ayrshire but that is it.
Does anyone know anything at all that might help? Any information is welcome.
Thanks
Richard

The only origin reference info that I can find is at http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.fc/q ... -crest.htm .
However, Black's "Surnames of Scotland" has no entry, except the 1686 variant in Argyll of MacKEGGIE etc., - of M'Kygo.

Later..... I don't like mysterious loose ends like this................
The 1901 and 1851 censuses each show just one family of this surname, both in or from South Ayrshire.......
But once again, the LDS 1881 turn up trumps, as, among the variations thrown up by a search for any McKERGOWs in the Lowland Scotland disk are several McCARGOs, see after my signature for the full list.
If you'd asked me is the spelling McCARGO was a Scottish surname, I'd have expressed some doubt, but would have had a look at Black's where, indeed there is a short entry for MACCARGO as a Galloway surname !
The possibility that M[a]cCARGO was heard and recorded as M[a]cKERGOW?, - very high !!.
I'd forget the orgin given on http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.fc/q ... -crest.htm .
Interestingly, neither Bell's "The Book of Ulster Surnames", not MacLysaght's "The Surnames of Ireland", have an entry............

There do seem to be plenty of alternative spellings for the name - in fact the name as recorded on their daughter's marriage certificate is Mackargow. McKerrow is a possibility. I suppose the problem is that if they didn't know how to read and write, or didn't very well, it was down to the registrar/recorder.
Whichever way, we seem to keep coming back to the Ayrshire/Galloway area. I guess that if the name is unusual, most of the people listed by David could well be related - as could my lot. Unfortunately, mine were born in the late 1700s. Is there any way of doing a quick check on parish records in that area for that time apart from the LDS?
Thanks
Richard

As has been said many time before on this wonderful forum, people also werent too particular or worried about how a name was spelled. It is only in comparatively recent times that accuracy in spelling has come to the fore. And I mean even before this day and age of "accurate identification"

Richard there is an entry for an Adam McKergow 1780 in Kirkmichael, Ayrshire. Unfortunately no mother listed. There are also 5 siblings but again no mother listed. this information is from the BVRI. There are also two other Adam McKergow's 1808, 1819 all in Ayrshire so DWW is on the right track as usual.

Hello Richard
Here are the siblings of Adam McKergow. I had a look at the other two Adams but they were born a bit later and wouldn’t fit in with the 1841 census age wise. Even though the ages were rounded up/down in that census.
I also found on IGI a 1765 marriage for Peter McKergow and Agness McGrean 2 Apr 1765, Kikmichael, Ayrshire, this is an extracted entry, not a submission I did a search with 1760 +- Ten years and his was the only entry that came up. Unfortunately I can’t find this marriage on the BVRI, but unfortunately it is not unusual to find extracts on IGI which aren’t on the BVRI CD’s.

Thanks again Stew
My Adam has a wife Maria, who the 1851 census claims also to be Scottish. Could you possibly go forward to after 1800 and see if there are any marriages between Adam McKergow and Maria someone? They had their first (and only to date) child in 1815 in Wales. I have not been able to find the marriage record amongst Welsh parish records (but that doesn't mean she isn't Welsh).
Many thanks
Richard

Hi Richard
Finding births and marriages in Wales is not productive at all using the BVRI!
According to an IGI extracted entry Andrew had a daughter Maria 8 Jan 1815 Bodfean, Caernarvon, Wales. with a Maria, but no other information.
As for Caernarvon on the BVRI there are only 4 (four) birth entries and no marriages at all, in fact, apart from three shires, the entries are a bit sparse, so sorry I cant help you.
Doing a marriage search on IGI Scotland, gives a marriage for Adam McKergow in 1796, to a Helen, but this would put him around 16 when he married????? So dont know if it is same person.
