Crichton Johnston Laing Smith Torrie

Post by James S Crichton » Mon May 07, 2007 1:29 pm

Ruth Crichton (nee Johnston)

Seeking descendants/relatives of Ruth Crichton (nee Johnston), b. Glasgow 1893; married Peter Crichton from Port Elizabeth, South Africa, in Glasgow, 1917; son Gordon S Crichton born Durban, South Africa, 1920.

Ruth and Peter were separated and Ruth returned to Scotland during the early 1920s to live with her mother, Helen Johnston (nee Campbell). Helen Johnston is believed to have been living in Millport at the time.

Helen Johnston died in Dunblane in 1941 and was survived by daughters Helen Torrie, Edith Smith (formerly Laing) and Ruth Crichton.

Ruth Crichton was still living in Scotland in 1950, but is likely to have relocated since her death is, apparently, not recorded in Scotland. Ruth is believed to have had a a daughter, also born in South Africa, named Lucille or Lorraine. Ruth is believed to have been talented in Highland and traditional dancing. Ruth and Peter Crichton managed a dance studio while they were together in Durban, Natal, South Africa at the start of the 1920s.

Any information gratefully received.

Hello James and a warm welcome to TalkingScot.

I'm afraid we may not be able to give you much assistance on Ruth's off-spring as we concentrate on ancestors rather than descendants. We are able to help people track back through the generations but prefer to steer clear of potential controversy (and living peoples' toes)
To research more recent generatrions this must be done in person since GRO entries in Edinburgh are not on-line and the original Registers must be viewed or via their own internal data bases which are not open for public viewing.
Available on-line entries for Births only go up to 1906; and for Marriages only up to 1931, so none of us have more recent records to refer to.

You said that you could not find Ruth's death recorded. Did you search under her Maiden name as many Scots women reverted to their maiden names on the death of a partner or divorce.

Hope we can help with other problems though.

Just wanted to add to Russell's welcome, and also to let you know we have some helpful sites listed that might be more in keeping with your search. http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5576

All the best with your search,

Thanks for that, Russell and Paddy. I know what you mean and with the kind assistance of one of the family history societies in Scotland I have had some lookups done for both Crichton and Johnston.

I mentioned descendants in the hope that some of them, or someone who knows them, are active in family history and that they might be inspired to make contact. Ruth Crichton was my grandmother, although I never knew her, and I would like to visit her resting place. If I can learn anything about her life after my grandfather left her and went to South Africa then that would be a bonus.

Thanks again for your help and for the work you do in keeping forums such as this free of nuisance posts.
