I have uploaded two extracts from the 1907 immigration record for Thomas Massie and family. In the first there is a series of numbers below his occupation, and I wondered if anyone knew their significance.

Thomas and Bella were on their way to brother George and the second extract shows his address. Although I have traced Thomas and Bella and George's son in census records there is no sign of George and his wife Maggie after this reference. Can anyone help me with the address - is it "Way"?

Hi Maisie
In the first image, can you give us some idea what the column headings are?
Looks like it might be name , age, ? (column with ticks) , gender, married or single... Occupation? ...........but then what? (two columns with yes and no) then I guess it is nationality in the last column.
It just might help someone work out what the numbers could be.
2nd image, address looks like Mary Street at a quick glance, if I'm looking at the correct bit.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Jean and Lesley
Wow, thanks so much for the help. I'm sure that's the family in 1910 as their two eldest children were called Margaret and William (in fact I'm pretty sure the 8 year old "Margt" at the bottom of the first extract is George's daughter, not Thomas' but that's another story). I didn't know about Catherine. Also the 1920/1930 census returns I have for Thomas and Bella and William Massie are all from Cook County. George and Thomas are two of my ggrandfather's brothers who have been a bit of a brick wall for a time. My first breakthrough came courtesy of Bob G on a previous forum so when I came back to them I thought I'd try again, and you've certainly knocked another big hole in that wall.
The columns are:
Name
Age (year)
Age (months)
Sex
Married or Single
Occupation or calling
Able to read
Able to write
The whole document was too big to load!
Thanks again
Maisie

Hi Maisie
Thanks for the info on the columns. I think for that number you may need to find someone who is very familiar with immigration records and knows what is typical or likely in that situation. The last bit of it almost looks like a date, but what looks like 5/15/40 does not seem to make any sense in the context of the date of travel or the age of the person.... even if it was 5/15/70, it still does not add up.
Sorry can't help with that part.
Best wishes

Hi Jean
Thanks very much for the offer – this is what I know so far.
In 1910 another brother Alfred came through Ellis Island and said he was on his way to Thomas Massie in Chicago. Alfred went back to Scotland, married and raised his family there.
Thomas, Bella and 2 kids (Margaret and Alexander) are on the 1920 census living at 53rd Street in Chicago. Young Bella, who would be about 14 or 15 by then, was not with them so maybe she didn’t survive. In 1930 Thomas and Bella are living on their own close by in West 53rd Street.
Also in 1930 William Massie is living at Peoria Street in Chicago with his sister Margaret, her husband George Hume and son. William is shown as a veteran which gives me a couple more possible sightings. William was born in Scotland on 23 August 1901. In 1920 there is a 19 year old William Massie born Scotland at Fort Dix. Then in 1975 a veteran called William Massie born 23 August 1900 was buried at Dayton Military Cemetery. The birth year is out but the day is right so it could be him. I don’t know enough about WW1 US enlistment to know whether William might have added a year to his age to join up. The birth year is the same on the Social Security Death index on the LDS site.
I’ve not been able to look for George, Margaret or Catherine since you found them as being a bit mean I use the free Ancestry access at my local library and I don’t have a session booked at the moment, so if you are able to find anything that would be great.
Maisie

Hi Maisie
Wow this is a tough lot you've got. I've managed to find a find a few missing pieces but not all yet. First off yes you are correct in that the Margt immigrating with Thomas and Bella has got to be George and Margaret's daughter. Why that is I can't say.....but Margaret and a 3 yr old William arrived without her in 1905 and were headed to Chicago to see George who was living at 5673 May Street. The writing was much nicer on this record!!

But I'll be darned if I find a solid lead on George, Margaret, or Catharine. I've one family in 1930 that it bugging me but I can't determine if it might be them. THe places of birth are all wrong, the ages are a bit out, and I can't find them or any others that look like them in 1920!!!! Also there is no deaths for any of them in the IL indexes......but I will keep looking for a bit more.
One thing I noticed about the SSDI record of WIlliam is that his number was issued in the state of Missouri. That means that he was a resident of that state at some point.....but the burial you found was in Ohio. So I'm still looking for some more clues on all that too!
Hopefully there is more to be found......
Best wishes

Hi again Maisie
I wonder if you've spent any time looking for Margaret and George Humes son...Albert? It surely looks like his Death info is in the SSDI.......and there just so happens to be a nifty website that will produce a copy of his DC from FL for a very reasonable fee (I think it's even $4.50US unless i've read something wrong!)....or there are even other probate etc type documents. Looks to be mortgage etc type info.....also looks to be possibly a wife's name on the indexing.....and so far I've not seen a likely DC for her so perhaps she's still living
I've looked for an online obit for him but so far have struck out on that account.....but perhaps I've just not found it yet
.
Must get some shuteye now though
Best wishes

Hi Jean
You certainly deserve some sleep after all that effort!
First, I think the death for Thomas R Massie in 1933 has got to be mine as his middle name was Ross.
I'm speculating that George and Margaret left young Margaret behind because she wasn't actually George's daughter (she was born 2 years before the marriage) but he later relented. It's either that or she wasn't well enough to travel for some reason.
I started getting interested in George and Margaret because a tree posted on a genealogy site claimed they had died at sea in 1905! But I knew that had to be wrong unless Thomas was telling fibs when he came over in 1907. So I'm glad they didn't suffer that fate. But now that I'm rapidly having to revise my understanding of their lives another thought occurs - Margaret had a half brother who emigrated to Montreal where he lived until the 1920s, although he later moved to Chicago where he died. I wonder if George and Margaret could have gone to Canada after 1910....
Thanks also for the ideas on Albert. I hadn't done any work on him but that's something for me to follow up.
Many thanks once again!
Best wishes
