Computer Numptie!

Post by PaulaD » Tue May 15, 2007 6:14 pm

Hi All,

Can anyone help me in simple language?
I've just bought a new pc with Windows XP home on it.
My old pc has Windows 98 and only a floppy or a cd rom.
How do I transfer my FTM and music files over to my new pc?
What sort of bits do I need to buy?
Have tried putting them on a memory stick but my pc won't download the driver it needs for Win 98.
I should add that I only have 1 monitor.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello Paula,

much depends on your need to transfer files on a regular basis (very easy backup strategy!) or if it is a "once only" transfer. Other factors affecting the transfer are the connections on the PCs.

The easiest methods are:

1) Direct cable connection using the printer ports (if your new PC has one). You will need a crossover print cable but the wizards for setting this up make it easy.
2) Networking (both PCs must have network connections) using PC to PC connection (called peer-to-peer networking). A crossover network cable may be needed (it will always work) but nowadays most network cards autosense so a normal cable cable suffices.
3) If you connect to the internet using a router, there may be another network port on it. That will allow both PCs to connect to the internet but also transfer files to each other.

However, for a one-off transfer, the easiest way is to e-mail attached files to a friend or your e-mail address at work. When you have transferred to the new PC, just receive them from your accomplice.

Regards,

John

Hi Paula,

Following on from Sporran's suggestions re email, you could set yourself up with a googlemail account and that would allow you to send the docs from your current email to googlemail and then you can opn your googlemail on your new pc and download the info.

Hope that makes sense!

Best wishes
Donna

p.s. I'm suggesting googlemail over hotmail as I believe it has more storage capacity.........but I could be wrong!

Hi,

Just to let you know, after failing dismally with your suggestions  I gave in and took my pc to an expert! He took the hard drive out of my old pc and put it in the new one so everything seems to be working well - touch wood.
Thanks anyway,
