ww11 prisoner of war.

Post by pkman3 » Wed May 16, 2007 1:01 pm

My father was a german prisoner of war held in a pow camp in Denny (near Stirling) and i would like to find records relating to this camp.

Also I have tried to see if there were any records kept regarding the status of these prisoners ie where captured and why they were transported here and any information about why they were kept so long after the war.

As you can appreciate my father is dead now so I cant ask him.

Any help in pointing me in the direction of appropriate records or sources would be much appreciated.

Hi pkman3
There is quite a lot of general information about POW records at the National Archives site:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/cata ... eafletID=7
Not sure if this info realtes to all of UK...

I have not been able to find very much relating specificlaly to Scottish camps so far, other than a list here:

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi the name of the camp was called Castle Rankine. You can find more by going to this site http:/ www.falkirk.gov.uk/home.aspx This site will include the link to Falkirk library where you will find the map of the area at the time you are looking at. There will not be stuff avaiable on line at that site, but no doubt you can email some one who can give you all the correct details. Hope this helps.

Hi

By Googling 'PoW camps in Scotland' several interesting sites came up.

This is a list of all the camps in Britain
http://www.islandfarm.fsnet.co.uk/LIST% ... CAMPS1.htm

Some info on the structure and running of camps

http://www.fortunecity.com/campus/dixie ... s/pows.htm

Falkirk Archives have the Personal papers of one of the PoWs in Denny camp with photographs and letters. You would have to contact them for further information.

http://www.falkirk.gov.uk/services/comm ... rs_g-l.pdf

The items are on page 12 of the pdf file.

Hope you find what you are looking for.
