Does Anyone Visit Kew

Post by Pandabean » Thu May 17, 2007 2:33 pm

Just wondering if anyone here vists Kew and had a bit of spare time would it be possible to do a quick lookup to see if a soldier's record exists and whether it is the correct soldier. I have full details of a possible soldier but it needs proving whether he served with that Regiment or not and whether I have the correct details. He survived the war and I am assuming he recieved a pension and hopefully he will be amongst the records somewhere.

I have been told by an aunt that he may have served in the Argyll's.

Details are as follows:

Andrew Ross (my great grandfather) was born in Falkirk, Scotland on the 21st May 1896. He is the son of William Ross and Mary Robb. Him and possibly two of his brothers (John (b.1898) and William (b.1893)) served in the war. I know Andrew did as there is a drawing/picture in the family somewhere of him in an army uniform.

The details from the possible MIC are:
Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders 3133 Private
Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders 201193 Private

Thank You.
Andy

Hi Andy,

Just a wee thought . . . .

Where abouts in Falkirk did Andrew come from?

My line of thought is as follows: He and his brothers might be mentioned on a Church Memorial somewhere as sometimes all the men are listed, not just the ones who didn't come home. Also, now and again, the churches have some records containing info that's not shown on any plaque - rank and regiment etc. and this might help you track the correct Andrew down?

Anne.

P.S. Camelon Parish Church (Dorrator Road) has 1 x Andrew Ross, 2 x William Ross and 1 x William J. Ross but I can't remember if it's all the men or the ones who were killed. There's no ranks or regiments listed.

Thanks Anne.

Andrew and his family lived in the town centre in 1923, Andrew Ross married Christina Rutherford Miller, his address is given as "Mathisons Buildings, Howgate, Falkirk." Prior to that I have Andrew's father dying in 1919 and he lived in the Howgate. Andrew was born in Beanmarket Close, Falkirk.

I never knew they recorded both those who survived and those that died. I am actually going to be back in Falkirk at the weekend but it is only a fleeting visit and won't have time to do any work. However I will be back down later in June for a few days.

Do you know which (if any) Church they would have attended? Quite a few to choose from!!

This is another on my list of the never ending things to do - but photographing these internal memorials can be difficult and then there's trying to organise a time to get in in the first place, then organise a return visit when the photos turn out to be completely awful!

I know you visit the Scottish War Memorials Forum, so if and when I manage to get something organised, I'll probably post the photos and transcriptions on there. If you find out which church would be most likely, let me know and I'll put it at the top of the list.

The marriage in 1923 took place at Stenhouse Manse in the forms of the Established Church of Scotland. if he stayed in the Howgate would he not attend the church in the town centre?

I dont know if it helps, but when my Nana passed away last year, i recieved an old photo album that has a written piece at the front to Andrew Ross for good attendance of the YMCA. I will get full details when I am at home tomorrow.

As far as I know, Stenhouse Manse . . . . .

http://www.falkirklocalhistorysociety.c ... .php?id=44

or . . . .

http://web.ukonline.co.uk/members/tom.p ... 3_larb.htm

and a current listing from Falkirk Today Factfile:
Stenhouse and Carron Parish Church Church Street, Stenhousemuir. Rev. Robert Hardie, Manse of Stenhouse, Church Street, Stenhousemuir.
Tel. 562393.

More questions than answers?

I checked the photo album, says that he was a member of the "Young Mens Bible Class for perfect attendance during years 1912-1913" I am guessing this may be held at a church near the town centre.
