British War Memorial Project

Post by apanderson » Sun May 20, 2007 11:17 am

I've been chatting to one of the co-ordinators from the BWMP and I was gobsmacked to hear that they are struggling to get volunteers to cover quite a lot of Glasgow cemeteries/graveyards.

He has had a request for a photo of a gravestone in the Glasgow Western Necropolis and as a last resort, enquired if a visit to Glasgow would be too much out of my area. I intend to have a go at finding this grave but I thought I would let everyone know who might be willing to do 'a wee bit' that there's obviously plenty of scope!

Should anyone be interested, in the first instance they should get in touch directly or visit the site ( http://www.britishwargraves.org.uk )
which has a good informative section on what they are looking for. Basically, if you volunteer to search and photograph a location, you will be sent a spreadsheet with the known graves and all you need to do is find them and take a photo or two. I've been doing this now for a good few years and it gives me endless satisfaction, especially as more often than not, you end up finding many more men/women listed on family stones which aren't on your list to begin with. Obviously it doesn't mean seeing a name on a stone that they're necessarily buried there but in the least, it is a memorial and on some occasions, the only memorial.

I must admit, that my wee hobby has become more of an obsession (as most of the folks on here will already know!) - but I'm not complaining - keeps me out of mischief and after all, it's a good cause!

Hi Anne
Hope you manage to find some willing volunteers for this worthwhile project.

Best wishes

Hi Anne,

I too hope you find some willing volunteers...it's such a worthwhile project...sorry I'm not in the area to help. I'll always be grateful for the many photos you sent me for several members of my Hogg family in Larbert.

By the way, did you every get your website up and running, or have you been too busy with your other projects?

[cheers]
Anne

Thanks Anne,

I have always thought about volunteering but I never knew how much commitment I needed to give. Just yesterday however I contacted them and have volunteered for the the Trinity Cemetery in Aberdeen. I had already got a photo of a couple from when I was photographing the War Memorials in there. I couldnt believe Trinity Cememetry was not done.

Well Done Andy!!

I'm sure you'll have a great time to yourself.

I'm glad you mentioned commitment - I should maybe have mentioned that too. The commitment lasts as long as it takes or as long as you want to carry on, no time limits, no hurry.

It took me 2 years to find one man in Denny Cemetery. His was one of the many family stones lying face down and the only reason I eventually did find him, was that the maintenance guys, for some reason, just happened to have turned over the stone (which was in completely the wrong place) and remembered his name. Denny Cemetery looks like a wedding cake - most of the sections are laid out in a teirs, so if a stone at the edge topples, it could end up anywhere.

I went on an adventure yesterday to the Western Necropolis and found the stone the BWMP were looking for. Needless to say, instead of a quick trip, I ended up wandering around for most of the day! I wish I had taken a picnic - maybe next time. :D

Seems I got 18 in one go from a common memorial to Navy personnell without even knowning it lol. It feels good to give something back to the community for all the help I have recieved from it in my research. Might just take a weekend when my exams are done to go over the cemetery and get the photos. There are also a couple other memorials in there that I have not yet photographed for the Scottish War memorials project.

Slightly off topic, but about two weeks ago I started to research the names of our local war memorial in Largs as a small project. I've put photos and info on those who fell onto my website at http://scotsgreateststory.tripod.com/id19.html , and will be doing considerably more as time allows! (Up to my eyes with university course work just now!).

It's very much a work in progress, but if you have a Largs connection, might be worth a look!

Annie,

Great Stuff!

I'm sure as well as cemeteries, there's lots of lovely wee Fife Churchyards to be investigated.

Chris,

I visited your site and am most impressed.

Over the years I've been doing voluntary stuff for the BWMP, I began a wee project on mainly local men whose graves I found, attempting to tie them up with the Church Memorials and War Memorials in the area, in the hope of establishing some sort of Roll of Honour. This started off as quite a simple exercise covering the Denny & Bonnybridge side of Falkirk, but it's gradually spread to almost the whole of Stirlingshire and slightly beyond!

I don't know exactly how many names are there (a good few thousand anyway) but it'll probably be one of those never ending projects and a real labour of love.

Thanks Anne,

My interest actually started from the civilian side, in that my great uncle was interned at the Ruhleben civilian POW camp in Germany during WW1. In trying to find out more about him I decided to create a project to identify the 4000 POWs who were there, as they tend to be forgotten as victims (many died whilst interned). I'm currently at 1400, and that is without a long promised update (I've probably got about another 150 waiting to be placed on the site). The Ruhleben site is at http://ruhleben.tripod.com .

With that well established, I thought it would be good to do something similar for our local war memorial, which I thinks looks amazing. I have so far really only been able to look at the CWGC entries for them and a couple of other sources, but I intend to flesh their stories out a bit more in the coming weeks, so it is a work in progress! There are local graves for some of the servicemen listed, and when the weather clears I will go down anbd phtoograph them and put them on the site as well, and may even submit them to the BWMP project as well.
