Where are they buried?

Post by maggiehill » Thu May 31, 2007 4:33 pm

Help is required to find the grave of my ggrandmother who was born Janet Finlayson Kerr and lived at West Linton as Janet Lando.

Janet Kerr married Alexander Dawson in 1881 according to the Free Church of Scotland and moved to Falkirk. Her son Thomas died there in 1889 at the age of 7 (swallowing carbolic acid accidentally) and Janet died in 1928 at Falkirk.

Falkirk.gov and Falkirk Library have searched electronic and paper records but cannot find any burial in Falkirk for either of them. They record all faiths.
Janet’s daughter Margaret Dawson was married in Falkirk in 1927 at the National Bank Chambers by Declaration.

I am assuming that they were Presbyterian’s belonging to The United Free Church or some other faith but where would they bury their dead?

Hi Maggie,

Do you mean you've contacted theCemetery Records Office?

By Post: Cemetery Office, Dorrator Road, Camelon, Falkirk FK2 7YJ

By Telephone: 01324 503650

By Fax: 01324 503651

By Email: bereavement@falkirk.gov.uk

I wasn't quite sure what you meant.

It's seems a bit strange that they don't have any records for them but in saying that, I know for a fact that one of my ancestors was buried in Polmont Cemetery in 1936 and they haven't got a note of her either. I think that she's one of 'dear knows how many' that have just been 'missed' when the records were being tranferred onto computers.

It wouldn't make any difference what religion they were in this area. All the Cemeteries are non-denominational and I believe that if requested, a lair or plot would be consecrated before burial for someone of the Catholic faith.

Do you have an addresses? Where exactly did Janet and wee Thomas die? It won't guarantee they'd be buried close to where they were living but it might give some clues.

Would there be any possibility of a family plot/lair in West Linton? I'm not sure what council is responsible for that area but I'm pretty sure someone on the site will know.

Anne

It was the Cemetery Records Office I contacted both by letter and e-mail. Some of the records are not on the computer yet, they have searched these records as well.

Thomas Dawson died at Burns Court, Hope Street.
Janet Dawson died at Booths Place.
West United Free Church is at West Bridge Street is the nearest Presbyterian Church. From 1929 it had joined with the Church of Scotland as the West Parish Church until 1991 when the congregation joined with that of nearby St Andrews. The graveyard was cleared in the 1960s. If they were buried here what would happen to remains less than a hundred years old?

All these locations are close together.

I have wondered if they where buried at West Linton but they are not in the family grave. We are going there later in year to search for them.

Hi Maggie,

The Church on West Bridge Street is now the People's Church and there's no Churchyard around it - whether there ever was, I don't know but I would think it would be well before the start of the 1900's as the surrounding buildings all date from around that date.

The Erskine Church has a Churchyard but it's one I haven't been to so I can't comment on that one.

The one which was cleared in the 60's was Falkirk Churchyard. It's right in the town centre and the Churchyard can be accessed either from the High Street, Upper Newmarket Street or Vicar Street. The inscriptions from the stones which were removed are listed in Mitchell's Pre-1855 MI Book for East Stirlingshire. Although in theory, these are only supposed to be pre-1855, they included later dates also. The most recent one I could find was 1908

I don't think bodies were exhumed when the place was landscaped. I would imagine that only if any 'remains' surfaced, they would be re-interred, probably in Camelon (Falkirk) Cemetery, but in common/unmarked graves.

I'm always back and forward to Camelon Cemetery for one reason or another so I can add your names to my list and if I come across any possibiites, I'll let you know. It would be useful if you could post their dates of death, especially the one who died first as it's sometimes easier to find the section by checking the dates of death of the first people mentioned on surrounding stones - if you follow me!
