Where do i start

Hi i have been researching my English family for about a year and have just plucked up the courage to look at the scottish side. The only thing is i have no idea what i am doing. My grandad did a booklet for us all with some family history in it and has given me some information on the Scottish side but it is very vaigue.
Can anyone help me please? Do you want to know what information i have?

The principals of research in Scotland are the same as what you have already been working with - that is, work from what you know, work backwards step by step, verifying as you go. So you should not find it very difficult or different at all! Infact, it will probably be easier as the Scottish records tend to give far more information than is given on their English counterparts.

The main web sites used for Scottish research tend to be www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk , a pay-per-view site where original images of births, death, marriage & census pages can be downloaded, and also the IGI which you are probably already familiar with!

But if you are stuck, and not sure what the next move is, then by all means post what you know and we will try to help with the next step.

Thanks for the warm welcome Lesley. I seem to have a problem at even finding BMD records!! I have Dulcie Marguerite Ireland born 13th October 1929 to Sandy Ireland and Hilda Lawrence. Sandy is the line i am looking into he was born i believe from the booklet i have in 10/04/1890 but it only says Scotland and he died 22/01/1962 but it doesnt say where. I believe if i am not mistaken that Sandy can be short for many names?! Any ideas as to how i would find out. Does Scotland have microfiches that can be ordered in England as i have an address for around 1929, which could possibly help me.

The 1929 date is too late for the online documents - they only go up to 1906 as there is 100yr closure on them.
The 1962 date for a death is also too late for the online records. However, I thougth we would be in with a good chance of finding the marriage of Sandy (usually short for Alexander) and Hilda, but I'm not seeing anything so far which looks likely.

There are lots of Alexander Irelands but none marrying a Hilda.
There is one Lawrence/Ireland marriage but not the first names you are looking for.
There is a Hilda May Laurence who married in 1928, but the surname of her groom is not what you are looking for....
There are 5 Alexander Irelands born in 1890 on Scotlands People, so it would not cost a fortune to check them all to see if the date you have matches one of them.

One way to get started might be to contact GROS and apply for Dulcie's birth if you are sure it was in Scotland. -see:

That should give you the date and place of marriage of the parents. Is there any chance they were not married in Scotland do you think?

Hi Lesley i was starting to think the same thing. I will have another look on ancestry for england and see if i can find anything. Failing that i will ring my grandad and try and get him to remember (memory is a bit vague now) but it could be worth a try.

That line of enquiry is always worth a go. Sometimes when asked about specific events, the memories start to come back.

Hi Lesley i have just gone through ancestry and found that they did infact marry in England. He is like you guessed called Alexander so i am going to order the marriage certificate to get me on my journey backwards.
