Britannic Assurance Company Ltd

Post by Pandabean » Mon Jun 11, 2007 7:08 pm

After searching through my grandfathers old case many times, I keep coming across this life assurance policy that is dated for 1937 for a sum of 18 pounds and 14 shillings. It was taken out by my grandfathers grandmother on his mothers side and he just turned 21.

Can anyone give me information on such life assurance policies and perhaps a little information on the Britannia Assurance Company?

Additional information:
Chief Offices, Broad Street Corner, Birmingham
Whole Life Assurance Policy

Thanks,
Andy

I don't know anything about the company but if you write to them with the policy number they will tell you if it has any monetary value.

They may also let you keep the policy even if it is surrendered - I have a few of my gran's they're huge and the wording is fascinating.

I think most people in those days took out "penny policies" for all their family. We cashed in a couple about fifteen years ago and they where worth about £600.

Oh yes I remember mine maturing when I was 15/16& I recieved the £15 all to myself & I bought a "lovely" aubergine coloured three-quarter length leather coat.
I think that Insurance Policies changed their policies after so many people were bumping off their off-spring for the insurance money. So the idea developed that the children would recieve the money on attaining a certain age.I think if they died the money was less & would be used to cover funeral expenses.I can't remember where I read this but I am sure somebody else who has greater knowledge than me can elaborate on it.

My brother, sister and I were all insured with the Pru (Prudential). Our wee "Pru Man" used to come to the house to collect the premiums (nae direct debits in those days  ) and his first job when a new baby was brought home was to write up its Penny Policy.

I think the law was later changed so that no-one could benefit from the death of a child, but I can't remember the age limit - maybe about 12 or 14?

Joette, My Mum wasn't quite as generous :( When mine matured she used the money to go towards a new three piece suite

I might give them a call or a letter when I am next back home, which won't be for a while yet.
