Paible Dumfries

Post by fatjock » Thu Jun 14, 2007 6:30 pm

I've got an Alexander Ramsay born in 1758, living in Boleskine, Inverness-shire and according to the 1851 census his birthplace was Paible in Dumfries-shire. I can't find Paible on a map, nor any name resembling Paible, and was wondering if anyone has any idea where or what it is. There is a Paible in Uist but that's not the one.

The only references I was able to find on Scotlands Gazeteer were in the Western Isles. Also no luck with http://www.dumfries-and-galloway.co.uk/sights/towns.htm

If you have the original document, perhaps you could upload it to the gallery and perhaps someone can read somethingelse into it?

If you have the original document
Maybe I should have said that I got this information from Ancestry.com and maybe it does need checking. :)

I don't know the area at all and my first thought when I saw Paible was Peebles but that's not Dumfries-shire. I'll have a look at the original census and see what's there.

On a brighter note, for an Aberdonian like me anyway, Ancestry.com offered me three FREE days when I clicked this link. No credit cards required.

Hi Fatjock:

A search for Alexander Rams*y in the 1851 census on ScotlandsPeople finds
1 1851 RAMSAY ALEXANDER M 87 LEUCHARS /FIFE
2 1851 RAMSEY ALEXANDER M 90 BOLESKINE AND ABERTARFF OR FORT AUGUSTUS /INVERNESS

Taking the age span and searching for an 1851 census report
You searched for: Surname: "rams*y"; Use Soundex: Off; Forename: "ale*ander*"; Sex: "Male"; Date From: 01 January 1760; Date To: 31 December 1765;

Date Surname Forename Parent Names Sex Parish City/County
  • 03/02/1760 RAMSAY ALEXANDER ROBERT RAMSAY/MARGARET WILSON M Inveresk and Musselburgh /MIDLOTHIAN
    26/10/1760 RAMSAY ALEXANDER ALEXANDER RAMSAY/HELEN SMART M Brechin /ANGUS
06/01/1760 RAMSAY ALEXANDER JOHN RAMSAY/MARGARET FERGUSON M Inveresk and Musselburgh /MIDLOTHIAN
    23/11/1760 RAMSAY ALEXANDER ALEXANDER RAMSAY/MARY CHALMERS M Cambusnethan /LANARK
    04/11/1760 RAMSAY ALEXANDER ALEXANDER RAMSAY/JANNET DICKSON M Crail /FIFE
    30/08/1761 RAMSAY ALEXANDER DAVID RAMSAY/MARGARET BLYTH M Monimail /FIFE
18/07/1762 RAMSAY ALEXANDER MUNGO RAMSAY/JANET KEMPIE U Fowlis Wester /PERTH
    10/11/1762 RAMSAY ALEXANDER ALEXANDER RAMSAY/JEAN MORISON FR8293 M Edinburgh EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN
    13/06/1762 RAMSAY ALEXANDER WILLIAM RAMSAY/ U Murroes /ANGUS
    18/01/1763 RAMSAY ALEXANDER JOHN RAMSAY/BARBRY FORBIS M Monimail /FIFE
19/04/1763 RAMSAY ALEXANDER WILLIAM RAMSAY/HELIN CROUMBIE M Haddington /EAST LOTHIAN
    12/06/1763 RAMSAY ALEXANDER JOHN RAMSAY/MARY FOWLDS M Stewarton /AYR
    27/05/1764 RAMSAY ALEXANDER DAVID RAMSAY/MARGARET FERNIE M Leuchars /FIFE
01/12/1765 RAMSAY ALEXANDER WILLIAM RAMSAY/ELIZABETH ERSKIN M Paisley Burgh or Low /RENFREW
11/11/1765 RAMSAY ALEXANDER GILBERT RAMSAY/JEAN PULMOOR U Coupar Angus /PERTH
In both cases, as soon as you enter a reference to Dumfries, you drop to zero hits.

Also, note that not ALL births/baptisms were registered, and that compulsory registration of births didn't start until 1855. Hope this is of some help. Perhaps you can narrow down the selection based on one of the parent's names.

Many thanks for your effort on this paddyscar.

This is my one.
2 1851 RAMSEY ALEXANDER M 90 BOLESKINE AND ABERTARFF OR FORT AUGUSTUS /INVERNESS
Here's his entry in the 1851 census.

Name: Alexr Ramsey
Age: 90
Estimated birth year: abt 1761
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name: Ann
Where born: Paible, Dumfries-Shire
Civil parish: Boleskine and Abertarff
County: Inverness
Occupation: Pauper (shepherd)

I've got his death certificate and his parents were John Ramsay and Mary Tait but I can find no reference to them anywhere, although there are an awful lot of Taits in the Dumfries area. I see that there is a Dumfries FHS so I'll get in touch with them and see if they have any suggestions.

Alexander was a shepherd. The book A Country Called Stratherrick, mentioned elsewhere on this forum, says that shepherds from the Southern Uplands were employed by the landowners to tend the newly introduced flocks of sheep in the late 1700s. I'm assuming he was one of them.

Just to let you all know - Paible, Dumfriesshire turned out to be Buittle, Kirkcudbright. And Buittle parish has a braw website.
