RootsMagic?

Post by Miss Poohs » Tue Jun 26, 2007 2:24 pm

I've been testing out packages with a view to eventually buying one.

The one that seems to have caught my eye so far is RootsMagic.

Do any of you fine people use it?

Id really like some user opinions - ta muchly :)

Or maybe further recommendations to try.

Hi Miss Poohs

I have both rootsmagic and Family Tree Maker. I have also tried evaluation versions of a few others.

Family Tree Maker is better for creating fancy wall charts, but how many people really use this I wonder. I found that even with only a couple of hundred names on my tree, it churned out a dozen or so pages for one wall chart :!: Now I have just under 500 on my tree so goodness knows how many pages it would take now.

Despite having FTM and trying other programmes I have always prefered Rootsmagic. I find it easy to use and the layout is easy on the eye. It also has a good selection of reports and charts. You can also make up your own reports, although I have found this quite tricky at times. But I think it would become easier the more reports you create.

This is only a persinal opinion, but I would recommend that you don't go for one of the versions that offer loads of free discs. I did this and found that I haven't used any of them.

Hope this has helped a wee bit? At the end of the day it's all down to preference. I'm sure other people like other software programmes for their own reasons, and there is no reason why they shouldn't.

Hope you enjoy Rootsmagic if you decide to go for it.

All the best

Bill

Thanks for that.

I tried Legacy but just couldn't get on with it. I had a fiddle with FTM as well, but didn't hit ot of there either.

Think I'll stick with my instincts with this one and buy RootsMagic, or let me rephrase that let my husband buy it for me for my birthday

With the current debacle with the US dollar it could be cheaper to download the trial version and then get the registration on-line at www.rootsmagic.com

which will get the program at the US price and they email you the registration codes that unlock the trial version to the full version and you do not lose any data that you have entered. The web site also contains instructions on how to replace the US dictionary with the UK dictionary

http://www.rootsmagic.com/tips.htm

and then you have the same version that is sold in the UK and possibly save some money that can then be used on SP for research. The version sold by their UK distributor contains some additional CDs with information that you may or may not want or need.

There is a user forum at www.rootsmagic.com/forums where you can post questions and get help with problems. They will send a monthly email newsletter that you can sign up for on their web site. Also, there is an email user list that you can subscribe to that is hosted by rootsweb. Instructions for signing up are here http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/S ... USERS.html
