Edinburgh in the 16th and 17th centuries

Post by John Bird » Fri Jul 06, 2007 10:20 am

Hi

I have been tracing my Craw family history and would like to write a family history from my earliest knowledge of them in Edinburgh in the late 1500s through to their arrival as early settlers in Tasmania Australia. I would particularly like to find out more about life in Edinburgh and surrounds during the 16 and 17th centuries.

I would appreciate any advice on where I can obtain this information, books etc.

regards

Hi John
One book which is really quite good in giving a flavour of Edinburgh and other places, although a bit later than your period of interest is:
"Social Life of Scotland in the Eighteenth Century" by Henry Grey Graham, published in 1901 and copies can usually be found in libraries, second hand book shops or on the web for a reasonable price. Or read the whole book FREE at:
http://www.electricscotland.com/history ... /18ndx.htm

General Scottish history titles such as those by Smout usually mention social conditions & etc too:
A History of the Scottish People, 1560-1830

The Kirk Session records give a good idea of life too - a primary source and unedited!! If you are unable to see originals try:
http://www.scotsfind.org/
for the Presbytrie Booke of Kircaldie and South Leith Records

Best wishes
Lesley
