Please help can't find my Pollock family on a single census.

[Totally Confused]

Hi there,

I hope somebody can help me...I am new to this site and to scotlandspeople.

I have just bought some credits for scotlandspeople, but I am completely stuck, my family seem to be missing from every single census...! I have spent loads of credits searching the 1871,1881 and1891 census' and have not yet found a single ancestor!

I am hoping that it is just because I am not very good at searching, so I was hoping maybe somebody else could help, I am looking for:

William Pollock b.c1843 (married 1863 Hutchesontown, Glasgow)
Elizabeth Pollock (nee Pollock) b.c1842
Isabella Hill Pollock b.c 1866 Tradeston, Glasgow
James Pollock b. Jan 1872 Hutchesontown, Glasgow
and possibly more siblings...

All should be in the Hutchesontown region of Glasgow.
I have got the marriage certificate, it even has addresses on it, but have still not been able to find them on the census'.

Any help, search tips etc would be very gratefully received,

I did a parent search on the IGI and came up with a few children for William Pollock and Elizabeth Pollock , could be 2 different couples though !

5. ROBERT POLLOCK - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 28 JUL 1863 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

6. JANET POLLOCK - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 14 APR 1870 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

7. JAMES POLLOCK - International Genealogical Index

The only thing I can think of is father William has died before James birth and mother is 'hiding' behind another surname.

Stating the obvious - have you dropped the middle 'L' in the searches ? I can't think of anyother major mispellings you could do to Pollock

I did have a quick look at the English 1881 census on family search, but they don't seem to have bobbed over the border.

The online IGI gives the following children to William Pollock and Elizabeth Pollock (ms. Pollock). My (unproven) feeling is that it is two families, one in Ayrshire and one in Glasgow.

• ROBERT POLLOCK - Birth: 28 JUL 1863 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark
  ISABELLA HILL POLLOCK - Birth: 23 AUG 1866 Tradeston, Glasgow
  JANET POLLOCK - Birth: 14 APR 1870 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark
  JAMES POLLOCK - Birth: 18 JAN 1872 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark
  
  JOHN POLLOCK POLLOCK - Birth: 20 OCT 1864 Kilmarnock, Ayr
  WILLIAM POLLOCK POLLOCK - Birth: 20 OCT 1864 Kilmarnock, Ayr
  JOHN POLLOCK - Birth: 08 MAY 1868 Kilmarnock, Ayr

So that gives you one more sibling. There could be more, but they may not show on the IGI as it stops at 1874-1875.

Unless they disappeared over to Ireland, where many Pollocks are listed, I would be surprised if the don't show up in the censuses.

That does give me somewhere to start looking I'll have a look for the siblings on the census though I have a feeling they may have disapeared as well!, I also hadn't thought of trying Pollock as Polock, a good idea. I hope they didn't change their surname, I'll never find them then!!!

They should definately be there in the 1871 census, in 1872 on a birth register it has their address as 57 or 59? Cathcart? Street, Glasgow, William was also living there in 1863.

Maybe they were avoiding the census for some reason? Did people do that? Oh well, I guess it makes them more interesting in a frustrating sort of way

Found this in the 1881 census. Roughly correct age for William and correct age for James. Note the spelling of the name. There were only 8 hits in the 1881 for a William Pollock born Lanark 1843 +/- 5 years. This was the only one with birthplace Glasgow.

Thankyou for having a look, thats actually the closest match Ive seen so far, so thats a big help. As to whether or not they are my elusive ancestors, I'm not entirely sure, but it has at least given me something to go on.

I have found a William Pollock, aged 42 on the 1871 census for High Church Paisley. Listed is also his wife Jessie, aged 39, children, Jessie Pollock, aged 14, Charles aged 11, William, aged 9, Robert J, aged 6, Mary Ann, aged 4. This shows all the children as being born in Renfrewshire, Paisley.

Their address is hard to read but I think it maybe 33 High Street as the two above it are 29 and 31.
