Hi Mossiepossie,
Firstly, find the mother's death using both surnames. A search on ScotlandsPeople for
First name: J*n*
Surname: Math*son
Other surname: M*cLennan
You will get 4 results. One stands out from the crowd by location.
From that you will know if she was married or widowed at the time of her death, and hence reduce the span of years to be searched. Also, as a guess, you can calculate her birth year and put that in the criteria ± 10 years when searching for him.
Stab a guess that he died in the same place as his wife and you will find his death too.
From these two death certificates you will get their parents and see if you can find any marriage or other children to each of these couples.
All the best,
AndrewP
