Hi there,
I have just discovered another irish link in my family whom i always thought were scottish. I was looking for her in the LDS site and found her -Ellen McFarlane born 03/11/1880 Belfast Antrim. Father James McFarlane mother Jane Dickson.
However as i have a short membership for emeraldancestor i thought i would look them up there. Strangely i can't find a marriage for them but i can't find a birth for Ellen ? any suggestions anyone.

Hi Ailsa
Have you checked the spelling for Ellen it could be
Hellen
Ellen
Elen
Elaenor
or any other permutaion, I would imagine that you have tried the wildcard searches, my emerald membership expired from our initial correspondence.
I have been searching through all of the information that I retrieved from the site for my own family hence the reason for not contacting sooner. I hope this is of some help.
Regards
Helen

Hi Ailsa,
My great-great-grandmother was referred to mainly Ellen, but only occasionally I’ve seen her called Helen. My second cousin was in Ireland this last May and found the Baptism for her in the Ballywalter 2nd Presbyterian Church, she was called NELLY.
My cousin also was told that “Helen was not really used in Ulster - usually Ellen/Nelly”.
So have a look for Nelly instead of Ellen/Helen.

Hi to Bob and Helen,
Thanks for your help re Ellen McFarlane and you were right Bob she was called Nelly by people who knew her! I found her through variations of McFarlane - i actually put in MacFarlane would you believe and that's how i found her. I still had no luck with a marriage for her parents Jane Dickson and James McFarlane possibly 1873 - + 10 years.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi Ailsa,
The online IGI gives the following marriage, and children as follows.
JAMES MACFARLANE / JANE DIXON
Marriage: 19 SEP 1856 Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland
GEORGE HANNAH MACFARLANE - Birth: 18 JAN 1857 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
MARY WILSON MACFARLANE - Birth: 19 MAY 1859 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
JANET HANNAH MACFARLANE - Birth: 06 MAY 1862 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
ELIZABETH BARRIE MACFARLANE - Birth: 31 OCT 1864 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
JAMES MACFARLANE - Birth: 14 JUL 1867 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Elizabeth Mc Farlane - Birth: 13 JUL 1873 Bangor, Down, Ireland
Margaret Christine McFarlane - Birth: 10 MAR 1875 Belfast, Antrim, Ireland
James Mc Farland - Birth: 29 DEC 1878 , Antrim, Ireland
Ellen McFarlane - Birth: 03 NOV 1880 Belfast, Antrim, Ireland
What I can't tell you for sure is if all the children are to the same parents of these names, or if these are (at least) two separate families.
The certificates of the parents' marriage and births of the Scottish-born children should all be available on ScotlandsPeople.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for the reply re the MacFarlanes - it is an odd one really. Ellen McFarlane 1880 definitely has father James mother Jane Dixon (actually Dickson on cert) but that would mean Jane had Ellen 24 years after she was married. I think the last 4 are definitely mine. I think it is one of these odd occasions where it has a couple with the same names but different spelling. If all the children are born in Ireland you would think they would have been married there. Saying that maybe they didn't marry and that's why i can't find a marriage on emeraldancestors, Ellen my gt grandmother had 3 girls and 1 boy and Ellen,Jean,Allison and William none of the names from the first lot of MacFarlanes.
As usual Andrew you do the digging and spur us on to continue - thanks.
