Hi Paul
Once you are in the late 1700s, it becomes a lot more difficult to find quick and easy answers! You are at the stage where, if you have copies of all the available SR & OPR birth, marriage and death entries, you need to branch into other records and spend a bit of time in archives to maybe make further progress.
I'm not sure where you have looked already, so here are some ideas to maybe help :
e.g. have you found a marriage for William & Margaret?
Do you know what William did for a living? There should be some indication of that on Elspet's death in 1865 (that may lead to some archive sources, depending on what he did...)
Have you seen the OPR entry for Elspet's birth/christening? - there may be clues there - witnesses to the christening, if mentioned, are often relations.
Do you know where they lived? Sometimes in the OPR a house or farm will be mentioned by name.
Have you looked at the Kirk Session records for the area for any likely names?
Have you tried a search on SP for wills?
Have you searched in the census data for other Ledinghams & Troups (should be a lot easier than some names!!) in the same area? Sometimes you have to gather many pieces of the jigsaw, then try to work out what fits, then prove it is correct!
At this stage in family research, the whole thing becomes much more to do with local information and the path each person must take becomes a unique journey - it is not always easy, but perseverance pays off...mostly
.... best of luck!
Best wishes
Lesley
