Where is Malgrundour?

Post by orchard » Thu Aug 16, 2007 1:49 pm

My ancestor John Wylie was born abt 1818 at Malgrundour, Scotland. Can anyone please help me find this place? John later married Mary Porter (born abt 1822). They emigrated to Australia in 1839 on the Fairfield. They had 6 children. John died at Langhorne's Creek, South Australia on 21 Apr 1876. Mary died 21 Mar 1877.
I would welcome any info you can share with me about John and Mary and their families

Hi Orchard
...and a warm welcome to Talking Scot :D

Can you tell us where you found the details of John's birth?

There is a marriage on the IGI which shows the same names, but the date is far too early for your pair if born abt 1818 & abt 1822:
  • JOHN WYLIE
    Marriages:
    Spouse: MARY PORTER
Marriage: 18 JAN 1823 Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew, Scotland

Do you have their death certs and if so, do these give any more info?

best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley.
My info on John and Mary comes from the Bio index. It indicates:
John Wylie, par: John, b 1818 Maldgrundour, Scotland d. 21 April 1876, buried Strathalbyn. arrived: 1839 on the Fairfield. occupation farmer, publican, residence: Mt Barker, Belvedere, rel: Meth
M. Mary nee Brown b. c 1822, d 21 March 1877

However when I looked up the birth records for their children they indicated that at least one child was born to John and Mary nee Porter.
If you can clear up this dicrepancy for me I'd appreciate it.

Could she have been married twice & it should have read formerly Porter nee Brown???
Still can't find anything approaching Malgrundour & I am still wondering if it's the name of a farm or something.
Tried to say it in a Teucher accent to see if anything matches or sounds alike but ...no.

Hello Orchard,

This is probably no help at all, but, if you go to http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/road/ ... tloc.shtml you'll find Scottish localities from the 1991 census all listed on the one page.

If you search the page for various sets of letters from the place you mentioned you'll find the only one ending 'dour' is Aberdour in Fife.

If you search for 'undo' it brings up Dundonald in S. Ayrshire. It's a bit of a long shot but a transcriber with plenty of immagination might have been able to turn that into the last part of your place name.

Alan

Edit: If it was in fact Dundonald there are several birth entries on the IGI (all submissions) for a John Wyllie born 1817/18 Dundonald, father John, mother Margaret Mitchel. (this is probably all just part of the long shot).

Hi Orchard
My info on John and Mary comes from the Bio index.
Sorry for being dense this morning, but I'm not sure what the Bio index is - can you explain please? Is is a LDS publication? Or is it an Australian Index?

Best wishes
Lesley

The other post dealing with the same "mystery place" is here:

- just so folk don't get confused or duplicate effort.

Best wishes

The BIO index is an Australian thing. A lady in South Australia did some research for me and she came up with the stuff I sent. I have no idea how to access it or anything sorry

If you go to this site http://www.shipping.familyhistorysa.info/ and search for john Wylie the result will be

WYLIE John, Mary nee PORTER arrived 1839-04-30 on Fairfield from Liverpool [1,2,4,7,20,23(1)]

The sources are:
[1] E A D Opie, South Australian Records prior to 1841, Adelaide, 1917
[2] Register of Emigrant Labourers Applying for a Free Passage to South Australia 1836-1841, PRO CO 386/149-151
[4] South Australian Births Registrations 1842 to 1906, SA Genealogy & Heraldry Soc, 1997
[7] Biographical Index of South Australians 1836-1885, SA Genealogy & Heraldry Soc, 1986
[20] South Australian Marriages Registrations 1842 to 1916, SAGHS, 2001
[23] 1841 South Australia Census Returns, SA Archives, GRG 24/13

For anyone with SA interests this site looks to be worth exploring. Also this one http://www.saghs.org.au/index.html

Hope this helps.
