Was James Sutherland part of the Kildonan Clearances?

Post by lpearce » Mon Aug 20, 2007 9:43 pm

We are looking to trace the parents of William Gunn Sutherland b. 9th Nov 1822 Achintoul, Kildonan. William married Robertina Gair McLeod b. 1825 Roster Caithness on the 28th Dec 1855 in the Lybster Free Church.

William's parents were James Sutherland and Christian Gunn, but that is all we know about them.
At William’s birth his parents seemed to be living Achintoul, Kildonan.
I also have found in the ‘Kildonan 1809 Militia List ‘ a ‘James Sutherland, tenant, Achintoul’ which may be him.

I am wondering if the family were moved as part of the Kildonan Clearances? If so wonder if there are any lists of names of families moved which would help in tracing them
Any help would be appreciated.
