Hannah Malcolm - Gone to America

Post by Billmalc » Fri Aug 24, 2007 11:26 pm

Hi All

Would there be any chance that someone with access to Ancestry could help me :?:

Hannah Malcolm b1873 in Perth, Scotland emigrated to the USA in 1909. According to Ellis Island records, she left Glasgow on 12 June 1909 on the 'Caledonia' arriving in New York on 21 June 1909. Her final destination was Corbin? Jefferson County, Montana. She was going to stay with John Swan? who may have been an uncle or cousin (her parents being David Malcolm and Mary swan).

I have tried the searching the 1910 census during free periods on Ancestry without success. I have also tried Scottish mattiage and death records just in case she returned home, but again no success

I was hoping that someone who knows what thet are doing with the USA records might be able to help, either to find Hannah or possibly John Swan, or both.

My search for Hannah has lasted for about 18 months up to now and I feel that I am hitting my head off a brick wall ](*,)

Up to now and to my knowledge, Hannah is my only ancestor to have ventured abroad, so it would be great to find out what happened to her.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bill,
It appears that Hannah went out there to marry her uncle or cousin

Here's the record:

1910
Township 7, Jefferson County, Montana
Swan, John, Head, 57, born in Scotland, came to U.S. in 1870, Engineer?
___ Hannah, Wife, 37, born in Scotland, came to U.S. in 1909

The image is terrible, so no wonder you didn't find it...

Regards,
Sarah

Hi Sarah

Thanks ever so much for your help, and such a prompt reply too [woohoo]

Looks like a bit of gossip for the family history as well

Will have to find out more about John and see if he is actually her uncle....surely not :?:

Thanks again Sarah....you're a star :!:

Gosh! I'm already suffering from information overload!

Can't believe you've found out so much, and I spent 18 months finding nothing

I hope you're sitting down...
Elizabeth is in Los Angeles in 1930, a waitress in a cafe and already married and divorced by age 18  I think you're getting your share of family gossip here  Her married name seems to have been Downs, but she uses Swan also.

Don't feel bad about not finding anything. I have been practically living in the U.S. census ever since it came online and I sometimes forget what year it is supposed to be outside my computer

Jings!

This is more gossip than the rest of the family put together. At long last

I can't believe you've found so much in such a short time. You really must be on a roll :!:
