Evening all,
My great uncle, Jim Cobb, was awarded the British Empire medal in WWII and left it to me in his will. I'd love to find out what he did to achieve it - it helpfully says "for meritorous(sp?) service" on the side, which could be anything! Is there any way I can get to see his records or anything? I've no clue what regiment he was in, or even where he served.

I believe that you might find the info in one of the official "Gazettes", - see http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/.
Some of the info, but up until which date I'm unsure, has been indexed.
