Forsyth/Shaw families, Duffus

Post by jen wilson » Wed Aug 29, 2007 4:02 pm

Hello,

Following the success of my last query, I thought I'd see if anyone has Forsyths from Duffus/Burghead, Morayshire.

I have Margaret Forsyth, born 1796, Duffus, daughter of George Forsyth and Catherine McBeath.

She married James Shaw who was born in Duffus 1788.

They had offspring: Alexander 1814
Catherine 1816
James 1818

James married Margaret Smith in Nairn and died in 1885

I know nothing more about Alexander and Catherine so would welcome any information on these two.

Hi Jen,

Sorry I've no answers for you. I just wondered if any of your Forsyths made their way to Larbert or St. Ninnians in Stirling...I haven't had great success with my Forsyths :(

Regards,
Anne H

Hi Anne,

Sorry, not that I know of but I haven't really followed anyone who was not in my direct line so I suppose it is possible.

Good luck,

Sometimes following the siblings as well can help to solve mysteries about your direct line, as well as discover rellies in far flung places.

Finding the MC's & DC's for Alexander and Catherine could be quite helpful.

McDonald or MacDonald (some couldn't make up their mind!), Bonner, Crichton, McKillop, Campbell, Cameron, Gitrig (+other spellings), Clark, Sloan, Stewart, McCutcheon, Ireland (the surname)

It's a fair point and in some cases I have been able to track down otherwise extremely elusive ancestors by tracing their siblings' marriages and deaths.

One day I'll get round to it!

Cheers,

Hi

A few years ago I researched my Forsyth's on Paternal side, all from Cromarty, then down the East coast, with not much bother.

Then last year, found on Maternal side, an Agnes Forsyth married one of my Brown line, who was from Aberdeen, but had moved to Durham, this Forsyth family, were actually from Stirlingshire!!

Anne H, this Family had George Forsyth(e) spelling changed all the time married to an Elizabeth Russell, both from Stirlingshire, then moving to Coatbridge & Dalry area. Is this the area for your Forsyth's?

Hi Ann

I have an Agnes Forsyth...parents are John Forsyth and Catherine McNab from Larbert. I found her with the family on the 1841 census as a 16 year old female servant, but although I found the births of the other seven children with no problem, I've never been able to find anything else on her...I started to think that maybe she was a relative rather than a daughter but her age would fit in nicely between the other children.

I haven't come across any George's yet and although I also have a few different Brown families, the two main branches are from Linlithgow and Polmont.

One of my Hogg girls married a John Forsyth and I think he stayed in Coatbridge at one point, but was born in Airdrie...not sure if this John Forsyth is actually related to my other Forsyth's.

I also have an Elizabeth Russell born in 1840 in Dumbarton to James Russell and Janet Baird, but nothing on Elizabeth since the 1851 census...see these brick walls :x

Anne H

Hi Anne H

I know how you feel :x I found my Browns, in Larkhall, after living in Kincardine and then Durham, wish they had stayed put!
I think this family of Forsyth's I have were from Stirlingshire originally, but they seemed to move around a good bit, my Agnes Forsyth born 1842 was nowhere to be found in 1861, she must have moved to Durham by this time. The Elizabeth Russell I have was from Falkirk born abt 1809.
There does seem to have been quite a few in Lanarkshire, in 1851 census, there is a Mary Russell age 3, b. Holytown, living with Forsyth family, she was an orphan, but I love a good puzzle!!

Hope something turns up for you soon.

Regards
Ann
