Re: Missing birth and death record

A mystery not easily solved anytime soon, too soon to download the certificate and the search rooms aren't open yet :( Bear in mind that the information on the death certificate is only as good as the knowledge of the informant, depending on who registered the death the information can be slightly a...

Re: Strange Freak Of Fisher Girls.

Interesting as always Alan,
My mother was a nurse who trained in Glasgow - so the last bit all adds up.

Re: Vandepeear Name

Like Andrew I had a quick look at the occurrences on Scotlands people. I followed the census results through on Ancestry too, expecting to find the birth places as Holland /Belgium [or somewhere exotic] - but they all seem to stem back to England - Dorset and Kent to be precise. The earliest census ...

Re: Strange Freak Of Fisher Girls.

Always called 'Dookers' in this household - but I believe it's a Moray Firth expression we've picked up from holidaying up there. Shortie was served to the hardy ones as a shivering bite. We always had a Chittery Bite after going to the Swimming Baths, I hadn't heard anyone else use the expression.

Re: Early change to Scotland death registration format

It would be interesting to learn who was the individual, or group of individuals, who found the 1855 system so onerous, Their picture would make a good background for a dart board. Perhaps safer for their descendants if we never find out just who the guilty parties were - 'cause we would track them...

Re: Kate Wright born 1887 Mosborough - Derbyshire

Thanks Andrew!

Ancestry have Annie's birth record as 19 Oct 1894 St. Mark's, Mosborough, Derbyshire, England, parents Thomas and Elizabeth.

None of the marriages I can see on Ancestry seem to match up [no father Thomas as a miner]

I wonder , did she stay in the UK?

Re: Annie Wright born 1894 - Mosborough, Derbyshire

It would be helpful if you could keep everything on the one thread Caroline - Admin, can you move this one? and add it to Caroline's 'Kate Wright' thread. [merged with Kate Wright thread - AndrewP] I did have a look at the death of an Annie Manifield [on Ancestry] that gives her Date of Birth as 18t...

Kelly's Directory of Glasgow 1972 - Look-ups Offered

I have in my possession a Kelly's Directory of Glasgow for 1972. I believe my father rescued it from a skip when Springburn College were re-doing the library or somesuch. Kellys were established in 1799 and were the forerunner of Telephone directories. This one contains a wealth of information: Alph...

Re: How can they "know"

Very often I'd say yes - but then again we can't prove otherwise either. I have a good chuckle reading some trees - one site has my ancestor having 2 wives - at once! all because on a census neighbouring houses had the same surname. Very common in fishing communities even yet. I only do it for my ow...
