Kelly's Directory of Glasgow 1972 - Look-ups Offered

I have in my possession a Kelly's Directory of Glasgow for 1972. I believe my father rescued it from a skip when Springburn College were re-doing the library or somesuch. Kellys were established in 1799 and were the forerunner of Telephone directories. This one contains a wealth of information: Alph...

Re: How can they "know"

Very often I'd say yes - but then again we can't prove otherwise either. I have a good chuckle reading some trees - one site has my ancestor having 2 wives - at once! all because on a census neighbouring houses had the same surname. Very common in fishing communities even yet. I only do it for my ow...

Re: Kate Wright born 1887 Mosborough - Derbyshire

I hadn't looked at the 1939 record before.

It tells you:
name, address, date of birth, gender, marital status and occupation plus the page I looked at had ARP warden and the like.

Re: Kate Wright born 1887 Mosborough - Derbyshire

[TS_welcome] I found her birth on Ancestry - confusingly noted as male. 1901 census has her father Thomas as a coal miner. I'm not seeing any marriage in that sort of area for her, nor any obvious death. There is the 1939 index for England & Wales - but if she married she'd be under her married name...

Re: Jeanie Hoy Edinburgh and family

Living in 2 addresses in the one street isn't uncommon - my family did, moving from a smaller to a larger, my Father was born on the top floor of a close and grew up on the 1st floor. Looking at the census records may help fill in the Aunts and Uncles. Beware though, Hoy is sometimes mis transcribed...

Re: Jeanie Hoy Edinburgh and family

Just to add a little about her married address: The valuation rolls show that a Robert Taylor rented a house at 16 Gladstone Terrace, Edinburgh in 1915 Then at number 18 from the rolls 1920, 25, 30, 35 & 1940. Fine blonde sandstone, 4 storey, tenement buildings still standing today in a leafy street...

Re: Jeanie Hoy Edinburgh and family

Firstly - [TS_welcome] The easiest way I find of getting facts and figures is to, find the marriage certificates. The only Taylor/Hoy marriage that fits the bill is: HOY JANE TAYLOR ROBERT 1885 685/4 66 St Giles [Sarah got there first!] So the Jeanie Hoy you found really can't be that bride, far too...

National Assistance Act Funerals

I was searching through Renfrewshire Council's cemetery information pages yesterday and came across this section on National Assisted Funerals. The modern [and much more dignified] version of a Paupers' Funeral. http://renfrewshire.gov.uk/NationalAssistanceActFunerals What interested me, was the lin...

Re: Mary Hanson born 29 March 1806

What is the source of Henry jnr's Birth details? is it from his death record ? or a family bible or such like? I simply can't find a record of a Henry Hanson born in Scotland in that time frame using the Old Parish records on Scotlands People or on Ancestry. Ancestry gives this for Mary: NAME: Mary ...
