How good are your eyes?

Post by billymac » Thu Feb 05, 2026 12:43 am

hello all,
I have an OPR record here that I'm having trouble reading. The first Smith is just fine but the latter part of the second child has me perplexed. Perhaps someone with better eyes or more experience with these records can shed some light.
Regards, Bill

Hi Bill,

On looking at the full page on ScotlandsPeople, you see the year 1854 at the top of the page. In the last few years of the OPRs, in many areas there were late recordings into the OPRs of people previously omitted from the registers. You will see on that page births over many years up to 1854 are recorded.

The text following the second 'Smith' birth is repeated on the end of many of the entries on the page. The other entries are easier to read as they are not on the smudged bottom corner of the page.

Using the other instances of that text on the page, I read it as:
N.B. omitted from the neglect of the parents to be inserted at the proper time.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thank you Andrew. I really must sharpen up. I hadn't even noticed the date range of entries on that single page. As per your suggestion, when I look further up the record page at the other entries the wording becomes clearer. ](*,)
