Oh my Grandpa used to sing "Paddy on the Railway"
He also used to sing the very non-pc
"Paddy was an Irishman,Paddy was a thief,
He came round to my house & stole a lump of beef,
I went round to Paddy's house,Paddy was in bed,
I picked up the lump of beef & broke it over his head.

I'm sorry but my last line of Skinny Malinky longlegs has a much ruder version which used to annoy my Mother no end -it rhymes with started!
As small children we were careful not to sing it in front of grown-ups.

Hi All,
Had good fun reading through all the rhymes. Joette, the version we sang, equally non-pc of course, was 'Taffy was a Welshman'!
What about
"There is a happy land
Down in Duke Street jail
Where a' the prisoners stand
Tied tae a nail
Ham an' eggs they never see
Dirty water fur their tea
There they live in misery
God save the queen"
Memories eh!

Rabbie Burns was born in Ayr.
Noo he's doon in Georges Square,
If ye want to see him there,
Jump on the bus and pay yer fare

What about this one?

"I chokit ower a tattie, ta-a-ttie
I chokit ower a tattie
A' through the tattie soup

My mother sent for the doctor, do-oc-ter
My mother sent for the doctor
A' through the tattie soup

The doctor...."

my memory deserts me here, does anyone know the next verses? I seem to remember that it wasn't a very happy ending?

Have to say that my memory of Skinny Malinky Long Legs is also the rude version! Also that we sang Build a Bonfire only where we came from the head teacher was known as the Rector. Up here they're known as the Heidie and I spent a lot of time a couple of weeks ago phoning the Heidie from Balmedie (for work reasons).

There is of course also the fate of My Auntie Mary's Canary.

We also used to sing and skip to Vote Vote Vote. My mother also had a habit of singing

House to Let, apply within
Lady put out for drinking Gin
Gin you know is a very bad thing
So out goes Jeanie and Mary comes in.
