Hi again,

This family is quite creative with their ages! In 1881 they are in Thornaby, Yorkshire and are running the Royal George Inn;

James Miller, Head, 58, Licensed Victualler, born Scotland
Janet Miller, Wife, 58, born Scotland
James Miller, Son, 24, Engine driver, born Scotland
Alexander Miller, son, 22, Signalman Rly, born Scotland
Mary Miller, Daur, 20, born Scotland

At least the three children keep their respective age differences consistent!

Regards,
Sarah

Hi again,

In 1891 they are still in Thornaby and the Royal George Inn has become the Royal George Hotel. Age is catching up with James and Janet and they now admit to being 72 and 71. Thomas is back at home and all four children are still single:
Thomas 38 Bricklayer
James 36 Engine Fitter
Alex 34 Barman
Mary 31 Dressmaker

Regards,
Sarah

Wow, thanks everyone!

I can't believe I didn't notice they were in Upsall even after I aquired the information that the married daughter was there.

I'll work with what you've given me and so how far I can go, once again a thank you with a big hug! :D

Saw your last note, thanks Sarah!

Hello Mary,

The Northern Echo (Darlington, England), Tuesday, August 28, 1888, reported that at the annual licensing sessions held at South Stockton Police Court it was mentioned that James Miller, of the Royal George Hotel, had been fined £2 and 19s costs on January 23rd, 1888, for permitting gaming with dominoes. It doesn’t appear to have been considered newsworthy at the time of the event.

The situation in 1901 appears to be that Thomas age 48 is still a Brick Layer, Mary age 40 is a Hotel Keeper Pub and James age 49 is a Black Smith. I can’t see the parents. I suppose the mother was with daughter in Scotland. I’m flying blind because I don’t have Ancestry just the search results here http://www.1901censusonline.com/search. ... ith_locale

FreeBMD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl have a couple of deaths that match fairly closely to the parents, James Miller died 1899 aged 80 and Janet 1898 aged 79 both in the District of Middlesbrough.

The 1911 Census for the North Riding of Yorkshire isn’t yet available but should be by the end of this month. http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx?5

Please send me an email address by PM if you want the newspaper image.

All the best,
Alan
