67. 19th Century British Library Newspapers (parts I and II)
Gale: The 19th Century British Library newspapers collection contains full runs of 48 national, regional and local newspapers. Titles were specially selected by the British Library to best represent nineteenth century Britain, from business to sport, from politics to entertainment and the arts. The collection focuses on newspapers from London, the English regions, home country newspapers from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, and titles in specialist areas such as Victorian radicalism and Chartism. Titles were selected to reflect the social and political developments of the times in which they were published. The original collection was augmented by the release of Part II, which includes an additional 22 regional newspapers, further expanding the geographical, social and political range of titles available.

I think all the Perth Papers are in the AK Bell Library
http://www.perthcity.co.uk/index.asp?pg=44&op=4&b=85but you have to actually go in there but I have folk from Fife Perth Glasgow Greenock Edinburgh US NZ & Aust and I find many bits on them it just depends on your search term what you turn up many of the newspapers had other papers please copy and it does pay to go back from time to time as new stuff gets added all the time don't go for a specific search in one paper just do general if they are there it will come up just put in surname for a start see what you get then try place name ... very often they are called Mr or Mrs no first name
I will have a look in my notes I am pretty sure I accessed some Perth papers somewhere on line but they were shocking scans really hard to read
also try the surname in google books
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/PER/
above has links to resources in Perth the Bell Library I think if you have the details ie name date of death ect they will do for you but they do charge a fee as most are on microfilm from memory ..... or you could ask on Rootsweb Perth list as there may be a list member who will help you
but if you have the dates from the card index try that first in British Library on line and narrow down by dates

Hi LornaLorna Allison wrote:Hello Trish
I have never enquired about the newspaper archive in Perth Library. Surely they would have one. I can phone and ask. What are your dates and names of possible obituaries?
Lorna
Thank you for the offer - I think as Lesley has mentioned, they may be in the AK Bell library as this is what the Ancestry index references. I haven't got around to checking all I am looking for yet - when Alan spoke of some additional papers in the 19th Century connection - to which I do have access - I was hoping Perth might get a mention - sometimes one can be lucky - there seems to be more resources coming online every day. I seem to be getting of the topic of the Dundee Courier - I probably should put other queries on a new thread.
Thank you for the additional info Lesley - much appreciated.
Trish

Hello Trish
Phoned AK Bell and if you look up the indices on Ancestry and get the reference numbers and let me know, I will happily go in and look them up for you. I need to be in Perth on a fairly regular basis at the moment anyway.
They have not yet indexed the period 1880-1920 but if you have dates and names for that period I can go in and look them up on microfilm.
The main papers they have online seem to be the (Perthshire) Courier, Advertiser, Constitution and the Journal which is recommended for 1st World War pictures etc. There are other newspapers as well.
Send me a PM if I can help.
Regards
Lorna

I have just been reading some of the 20 or so items in the Dundee Courier in the 1880s regarding the famous 'poet' William Topaz MacGonagall - he of the 'Tay Bridge Disaster' & 'Rattling Boy of Dublin Town'. Quite a few are ads for his upcoming appearances but several describe his fairly disastrous attempts at making those appearances to recite his material where the ruffians of Dundee won't even give him a chance to open his mouth and shower the stage with vegetables & rotten eggs. It gives a very interesting insight into the times in Dundee but you can't help feeling sorry for MacGonagall - he was fully convinced of his own 'tallents'. Pretty funny though.

Hi Robert
Best wishes
Lesley
( a Dundonian by birth!)
Its still a bit like that in Dundee....where the ruffians of Dundee won't even give him a chance to open his mouth and shower the stage with vegetables & rotten eggs.
Best wishes

With some help from Alan - I found MacGonagall a short time ago - speaking of his trip to Inverness - to the Gellions Hotelrjpaton wrote:I have just been reading some of the 20 or so items in the Dundee Courier in the 1880s regarding the famous 'poet' William Topaz MacGonagall - he of the 'Tay Bridge Disaster' & 'Rattling Boy of Dublin Town'. I would like to add a dozen thank yous to Lorna for finding some wonderful info for me at the Perth library. My Scottish research has been getting so much help from TS lately - it is very much appreciated - next best to being teleported across the oceans.Lorna Allison wrote:Hello Trish

Just a short addition to this thread to advise that the State Library of New South Wales now has Part 2 of 19C British Library Newspapers including the Dundee Courier.
