The reason I recall it is that my arm became infected and swollen and I had to wear a cage on it to prevent it being hit.

Anyone else have that problem ?
I remember this well from the late fifties, but recollect something about it being essential to keep the largish scab intact until naturally healed, otherwise the goodness went out of the injection. No swimming for weeks. Some wore cages, others had yards of sticking plaster.

Glad it all worked, though.

Thrall

You are correct about the scab.

I recall getting a Mantoux test done a couple of times for two different jobs I did (Navy and Student Nurse) and we were told if it did scab over again to leave it and keep it dry.

Meant to add but forgot that this birth register entry has opened up a fascinating situation in Tongue where around 40 birth registrations were made in 1895 relating to births in 1893

They are signed by an "Interim Registrar" and countersigned by an "Examiner", - a term, I assume, for one of the peripatetic superintendant registrars who travelled around their area checking that all was OK, as obviously had not been the case at some point in Tongue in 1893.

For the moment I haven't looked at D&M, but will be doing so at some point !! 8)

Hello all,

David mentioned a strange situation in Tongue, and I found a similar one in Maybole coincidentally (we have been e-mailing each other).

The deaths in Maybole (Ayrshire) during 1864 start in May with someone who died in May 1863. These late registrations carry on for several pages, until the occasional recent death appears, but even by page 31 there is still a death from the previous year. I looked only at the deaths.

It is therefore best to keep an open mind about dates when searching. For example, if a child was 8 in the 1901 census for Tongue, I might look a year either side of 1893 to find the birth, but I might not consider that it was not recorded until 1895.

I have asked SP for views on this and I am waiting to hear back.

Regards,

John

Hi John,

In NRH, there are the books of the annual reports to the Registrar General for Scotland. It may be worth a read in the books around these years to see if there is mention of poor record keeping, or similar, in these areas. If you are in NRH, these books can be found on the shelves surrounding the Dome Search Room, above the census microfilms.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson
