Hi
This mag, for which someone bought me a subscription at Christmas, once managed to expunge from history 3 out of 4 of Scotland's ancient universities, namely Glasgow , Aberdeen and Edinburgh. Now see the August edition at page 25 for a Cooks tour of the history of religious denominations in Scotland that manages to omit any mention of the Covenant or, even more surprising since the article deals with religious record keeping, the Great Disruption of 1843. I am no ecclesiastical historian but I feel another letter to the ed coming on.
Anne, ye wid be better stickin' tae "The Leopard" up ther'
I occasionally get a copy send down here, and it at least has some guid mince in it.
I have never read any decent genealogy magazine and in fairness never the YFT.

I think this from Scott sums the topic of these mags well.
I suspect that even if there was a solely Scottish gen mag, it would be lampooned for neglecting it's southern neighbours!
And if anyone needs any help with the Covenanters or the Disruption, I have several books on the subjects.
Thanks to David for the copy of the letter.
well done that Man!
I thought it was a bonus when they gave us the seven day access.
I have never ventured on any of the English sites, but plan to have a go this week.
Any advice on which ones you have found guid value on would be appreciated.

Hi Scott

Thanks for quoting the letter, I wasn't sure if I would get into trouble doing that!
GarrickWebster "published" it. i.e. put it into the public domain, by posting it on the YFT DG.
Scooter wrote:I take it that they haven't asked you to contribute anything of late? Your past articles have been invaluable.
They know where to find me when they want the token 100 words for the "The Scottish Situation" box in a 2,500 article dealing with the English aspect.

Hi

A Scottish genmag which was avowedly such would be immune from any charge that it was neglecting England because it would state its terms of reference clearly i.e. that it was a Scottish genie mag. I am not sure how publishing and distribution would work as many of its audience would be overseas. Maybe it would have to be published on the web which would be difficult to finance.

Having said all that the number of different topics and queries on this DG alone show that there would be plenty of mileage in the content.

Davie, my heart is far from Aberdonian so the Leopard does not really do it for me.

And another thing....

Page 10 of YFT states:
  • New Genealogy centres for Scotland.
A new genealogy centre has opened in St Andrews, Scotland. The centre, based at the local Services Centre in St Mary's Place hold birth, marriage, death and census records back to 1855. The centre is open... [opening hours given, cannae be bothered typing them - same as they were before, see link below!] Staff are available on site to help visitors.
Does this mean things have changed considerably in six months (hey, miracles do happen) or is this a misrepresentation of the true situation?
see:

Seems the situation is still the same -
Sunday Mail 28 May 2006 that is, at £20 per hour!
A NEW genealogy centre in St Andrews lets people draw up a family tree dating back to the 16th century with the help of expert registrars such as Jennifer.

An assisted service costs £20 an hour or £60 for a family tree. Jennifer said: "Since it opened it has been incredibly popular. We get people from all over the world.

Don't know !

What I do know is that the exact format of such local search facilities is very much up to the local authority concerned. In other words, other authorities may have ideas that are different from those of Glasgow City Council's Park Circus set-up.

I also seem to recall hearing that the £20/hr might be a temporary measure until there was computer access to DIGROS that didn't need supervision.

Aye, but that Sunday Mail link (above ) is a very recent report (28 May 2006) wich says that "An assisted service costs £20 an hour or £60 for a family tree." So, it would seem to be still the case.

And er...I just phoned them...it is still £20 per hour. They don't know yet when the public will be able to come in and do their own searching.

Best wishes

Hi David,

Yes, I was being a bit tongue in cheek with that comment  In fact, am I right in thinking that there is a Scottish 'History' magazine out there? I'm sure I saw one in a bookshop on Charing Cross Road the other week?

Best for now,

Scott

Hi David,

I'll have a look next time I'm in that area. I think it was called History Scotland, so this might be it, the cover looks familiar: http://www.historyscotland.com

Best,

Best wishes
