Hi Jean
The PDA has a docking station which links into the main PC via a USB connection - the software is installed on both devices - when the two are connected via the docking station the software is set to automatically synchronise any new or altered data between the two devices - so that they both have the same info. It is not an unusual application - but I suppose simplistically you are correct - once it is set up all you literally have to do is stand back and watch. This link has a demo somewhere in it -

The one I have is an Axim X51v - but there are lots of PDAs at a variety of prices on the market - I suppose it is mostly a question of choice.
The software I got (Pocket Genealogist Pro) can 'speak' to all of the main genealogy software packages - Roots Magic, Legacy, Family Tree Maker - etc - all the big brands mostly - here is the link to PG:-

The PDA is windows based - so you can download BMD's etc directly onto it and view them there - likewise with PDF files and any Microsoft Office products - Word / Excel/ PowerPoint etc. I suppose the big dilemma is justifying the cost - I have a laptop as well - but I must admit I hardly use it anymore now that I have the PDA - it is far more useful and portable. The PDA also syncs the info between the laptop and the main PC. It will also 'talk' to the laptop via infrared beam - so no cables needed
I'm gonna stop now as even to myself I'm sounding like a geek.
Best regards
Ted
PS - I'm not a young whiz kid - I'm an auld git !!
