Hi Davie,
I also have several who use middle names. My husband is Joseph Kevin, but has always used the name Kevin.

Speaking about names and nicknames, can anyone tell me what the name Dolly would be the nickname for ???

Dear Catriona and Fiona,
Thanks for those, they sound like possibilities and will certainly be worth a try. There is a Peggy in the family, so I think that would be a Margaret.

Hi Sandy
sounds like a touch of Gaelic influence creeping in there!
Margaret and Peggy were the English and Gaelic equivalents and, as Fiona suggests Dolina and Donaldina would be obvious first choices.

Well, Hello, Dolly!
I had an acquaintance long ago who was known as "Dolly", whose name was totally unrelated (Miriam, I think?), who admitted that she was called "Dolly" because at an early age her father thought she looked like a young girl's toy: a toy doll

We're not talking about your generation.
This is 2 generations further back when girls with the name Janet were called Jessie (in Scotland) and some of the surnames Sandy is looking for are Mathieson, MacLean and McLuckie.
that's not misdirection! Its merely a suggestion

Hi everyone,
Its hard to say with this family. Their surname is Young, and they lived in Glasgow with the children being born late 1800's.
I only have my grandmothers birth date of 14 Mar 1894, so don't know if the other siblings were born earlier or later.
From what my Mum can remember, there was a Peggy, May, Dolly and Edward, as well as her mum who was named Hilda Madeline Fletcher Young. So I would guess the other siblings would have a few extra names in there as well. The father, William Edward Young was born in Scotland, I believe, but the mother Elizabeth Margaret Caldwell is I think born in England.
It is a part of the family I have to start working on.
At least now I will have an idea of what other names may crop up if I find the family on a census record
