But,
You're one of the best genealogy detectives on TS. Many times questions are posted and answered, but its not often I see, how the member came to their conclusion. This is a fine example, Jean. Keep them coming, its a good learning experience for us all.

Marilyn
P.S. Have you ever considered writing a book? I could be your agent.

Hey Donna - Brilliant that you got your man !
The real reason that I ramember Benhar so well is that it gave rise to s snooker shot "The Benhar Rush". My daddy taught me this shot and it remains one of my best.
Cheers

James's parents were John Reid b c 1820 and Jean Gilmour. It would appear that the children were born in Barony and Glasgow.

Hi Donna,
You may need to track down John Reid's death certificate to see who are listed as his parents. Unfortunately there may be too may of them out there to track him down within reasonable costs. Have you found the family in any of the censuses?
There is a death certificate that may be Jean (Jane) Reid or Gilmour that could be worth investigating - 1868 Glasgow (Central District), age 51. That should show if John was still living at that time and hopefully narrow down the time frame for his death. Before you take the as good infomation, you need to prove it is the right Jean (Jane) Reid. That could be a tough challenge.
The online IGI shows them as producing children fom 1843 to 1859. The age at death for Jean may help you find her in the censuses.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi Donna
Was at work when I was replying earlier....now home, cooked and fed, dishes done and settled in for the duration
From reading your last post I'm not quite following your questioning. I think maybe you're trying to just go backwards as fast as you can and in a straight line. Is this correct? If so.....I think you need to slow down. It's just that when you go so fast and run smack into hitting those brick walls (or dry stane dykes) then it hurts alot more than if you walk up to them slowly with your hands out in front of you.
Have you gathered all the pertinent data on the generation of John and Jean??
Here's their children from the IGI....
1. JAMES REID - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 11 JAN 1853 Barony, Lanark, Scotland
2. JESSIE REID - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 12 DEC 1849 Barony, Lanark, Scotland
3. ALEXANDER REID - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 04 SEP 1855 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
4. ISABELLA REID - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 28 FEB 1859 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
5. HELEN REID - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: MAY 1843 Barony, Lanark, Scotland
6. HELEN REID - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 03 MAY 1843 Barony, Lanark, Scotland
7. COLIN REID - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 25 AUG 1847 Barony, Lanark, Scotland
8. WILLIAM REID - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 09 MAY 1845 Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
and since wee Isabella was born in 1859 then you're pretty much assured of getting parent details from the DC of both John and Jean. It might be wise to find them on the 1861 census to see if they stayed in Barony. Also good to find them on the census to see where they stated they had been born. WIth a bit of luck it will be in Scotland and in a Parish where the OPR not only survive but include the dates that you need.
If you know any of these details already then throw them out there and I'll take a peek in the BIVRI index to see if that might hold any info.
Best wishes
Jean

Hi Donna
Here's a boost to help you along....
You'll find Jane REID mn GILMOUR DC in 1868...just use the maiden name search parameter and leave it wide open...I think there were only 2 and she was the only Jane (think the other one was a Janet).
Finding the death of her hubbie was not quite so easy. After rummaging about some and narrowing up the death window for him (he was still living when Jane died) it took several tries...but here 'tis...
1873 REID JOHN M 58 HUTCHESONTOWN GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/10 0772
Parents are named on both DC's. A search of the BIVRI doesn't give anything at all on Johon or Jane's family but you'll find her and 3 other siblings on the IGI. At the moment am out of credits so never did get a look at a census of where John stated he was born. The parents named on his DC will get you a list of children all born Cumbernauld. With luck you can cross reference this with JOhn stating he was born there.
Best wishes
Jean
