Joette

I too got the cane here in Oz in 1964/65 or was it both

There are schools of thought regarding the re-introduction of corporal punishment in schools, but I am in two minds over this issue, considering I had a large board ruler broken over my hands by my maths/form teacher causing me great discomfort for a few days. NO! sympathy from my mother I might add  she said I must have deserved it

Hi Susan
For Dundee try:
http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/archives/main.htm
- clikc on the Official Records link, some school records are held but you would really need to contact them to find out more, as it seems they may be for closed schools only.

Best wishes
Lesley

The use of the strap in Newfoundland went on well into the 1970s. not to mention rulers or the pointer for the blackboard.

Hi All

At the school that I went to in Montreal, (Protestant Schools of Greater Montreal) the girls were never given the strap. Though it was rarely done, boys could "get the strap," one slap only on each hand, which was given usually by the teacher in a private office. There was a special strap for the occasion, pointer or rulers were not allowed for such things.

All strapping of boys was stopped around 1960.

Regards

In Aberdeen, school log books and admission registers are held at the local archive. These are available for public view, but for records under 75 years (or maybe 100 - I can't remember!) there are data protection issues.

However, under the DPA, family history is an excluded category so the records can be viewed but copies may be restricted. Some of the pages of log books may be closed, but generally the records are public.

I think the link that was posted may be breaking the DPA for some of the later records...
