In general the Scottish situation is easier with respect to the closure period.

Where the subject ofthe enquiry relates to a deceased peron, some health boards treat the closure period as just 30 years.

@Annette- Thanks for the advice as I can imagine reading those records is very different to reading a DC. People become more than just a name
You are learning more about them than they, or their family, did and in my GGran's case it was very sad to read how ill she was in great detail. More, I think, because it would have upset my Gran.

You mentioned a photograph. Was this a photograph of your great grandmother?
Yes it is a photo of her taken on admission to Woodilee in the 1920's, again she looks very ill (she had TB). This was what I actually requested from the archives after they confirmed in a phone call that one existed but I got the whole record with it.

On a positive note from a family history point of view it also gave some details of her children and siblings that I found really useful as I didn't realise how many siblings my Gran had.

As a matter of interest did you have to pay anything for these hospital records?

The reply I got a few days ago made no mention of any charge at for the records they've promised to send - I've e-mailed back offering to pay (I wouldn't think they've got a bottomless budget), but haven't heard back. BTW they did say they were having a bit of trouble with their copying equipment, so it might take a while to come through, but I did get a brief summary in the e-mail.

I received a very prompt and polite email back with some really good infromation enclosed. Unfortunately there are no longer any case notes for the Southern General but there was plenty on my ancestor's time at Hawkhead. Like the experience of others they have kindly informed me that the case notes will be sent out but are experiencing problems with the copying equipment at the moment.

It really is nice to find a body supplying this kind of service for the benefit of others. They should be commended for it.
