Hi Russell & Miss Poohs

I don’t know about a graduation date, I think it’s a long long way off yet.

Muttering to the computer in a funny accent does me no good at all, although I do it, but, its for entirely different reasons than trying to decipher.

I remember blotting paper, even ink & straight nib pens, I'm even loathed to admit my first calculator was an abacus.

Kathy
You didnae use a slate as well did you?

Back to entering names

I use Legacy and enter the names, using the spelling I find, although this sometimes means changing the spelling the programme automatically generates. The programme has a section (?) called AKA (also known as). I dont usually use this feature for spelling variations, only name variations of the ilk we all know about. But there is a line of lang deid yins I found through a distant cousin link in GR, and it is possible that the AKA section could be useful for the spelling variations in that lot.

Hi Stewie,

Yes, I did, I’d forgotten about the slate.

The AKA is a good feature, Family Tree Maker lacks this feature, and I would use it.

Now that my tree is growing in size, I’m surprised how many little snippets there are to remember about individuals, I do record these in “Notes”, an AKA feature would have been an advantage.

When you open the "Edit Individual" window in FTM there is a box under "Name" and to the right of "Title" where you can enter AKA.

My Girtrig lot have so many spelling I have used it to keep track of their variations.

Hi Mary,

My FT is 2005, and that’s how long I’ve been using it, and never noticed the AKA.

I’m always harping to my better half to read the instructions, perhaps I should listen to my own advice!

Thanks for pointing out the AKA.

I'm using the same version, Kathy, and had it that long as well.

I only noticed the AKA after about a year  but it has turned out to be very useful.
