Like you Russell I noticed grandchildren or nephews and nieces being taken in. Good clues to whom the daughters married

Just tested the Freebee and it’s still available.

If there is someone else in the household who uses the same computer and they want to take advantage of the Freebie they may need to set up another email address with the ISP or wherever, and on their email program, but will have to delete cookies and possibly clear the cache before they register for the Freebie.

Hi,

Yes even now this is still free and I had started to make some progress but I closed out by mistake and now when I go back in they tell me I have already availed of the offer - yes but only for 15 minutes!! How do I get back in?

Hi Tish:

Ignore the message and just hit the green continue button - worked for me!

Another consideration to get Ancestry (the basic US edition at least) is to get online and purchase a copy of Family Treemaker 2006 which includes a free trial of Ancestry.

I recently purchased a copy of Family Treemaker 2006 Collectors Edition on Ebay for $25 with $6 shipping - $30.90 total and now have 1 year of Ancestry.com to use - my only wish is that it would be the World Edition of Ancestry so I might get at the English Census records, but it's better than nothing for $2.50 a month.

Cheers

Frances,

thank you - that worked! I've found a few possibilities - I'll be up all night!

I must be lucky, I was just browsing on Ancestry and a pop-up offerred me a 14 day free trial, which I am now making good use of. Most of my ancestors are Scots, apart from a few Irish, it appears that the only help for me is the Census info. As far as I can determine there are no BMDs. for Scotland. Am I correct on this?

Hi David

Statutory recording of Births, Marriages and Deaths began in Scotland in 1855. Before that date only Births (or more probably baptisms) and Marriages were noted in the Old Parochial Records (OPR)
Both sets of records can be accessed and downloaded from scotlandspeople.gov.uk
It's a pay -to-view site but handles all the original records so what you get is an original not a transcript. The post 1855 records are very informative. You can link directly from here from the button on our homepage.

Thanks Russell, I have used Scotlands People and, before that, Scots Origins, and will be going back to check some new things as a result of new info found on Ancestry. Being a true Scot, however, I was hoping to get some more free stuff during my free trial.Ach weel its only money.

Hi David,

You're right, you won't find the BMD's for Scotland on Ancestry, free or otherwise...they are only on SP. On the other hand, you might still get lucky with your Ancestry freebie and find some of your relatives WW1 records or mention of them in the directories. They can be difficult to find because of the somewhat haphazard way in which they were entered into Ancestry's system but I was pleasantly surprised to find my grandfather's and others WW1 records and also several listings in the telephone directories for one of my families. It all helps to put a little more "flesh on the bones" so to speak :)

Regards,
Anne H
